Where do we get (pet) rats?

Crispy

The following psytrance is baṉned: All
Despite sparrow's boundless cat love, we can't have a cat in this flat (no open space) so as a compromise, we're going to get 2 pet rats. Where would we go to get such things? Any reccomendations?

I'd recommend going to a PET SHOP :p :D

I think I've seen rats in our local shop(and not just frozen ones for me snake)

You could try ACME Labs ;)

I'm gonna get a pair of rats too...few months time. :) :)

Is there a rescue centre somewhere with unwanted ones maybe? I'd check that out first....

They have some lovely ones in the pet shop in Sydenham SE26 also look on dog pages under other animals

You don't strictly need open space to own cats

Mine are innies, they never go out

We got an indoor cat from Battesea. They do have a few who don't go out so might be worth visiting and getting your name on the list oof you want a cat. We got one after about 3 months on the list.

sojourner and nipsa - I have a feeling a cat is out of the question for the moment. :(

(he just doesn't fully understand yet, but I'm working on him!)

Though am genuinely looking foward to the rats though. Only slight thing I'm worried about in re: to rat rescue centres is that if we end up getting an older one (2 years +) I'll get terribly attached to it and it'll die a few months later. :(

I love rats.

Wish I could have them. Don't think the dogs would take too kindly though :(
See, at one point I want cats (who could have guessed! :D) and if I'm going to love the rats as much as I think I will, I may well want to keep having rats, but I'mm a bit worried that wouldn't work well as a combination either.

So what I was wondering (in one of my more silly contemplative moments) is if you had your cat from a kitten, and introduced it to rats then, would it grow up to see rats as it's friends or would it only work if those specific rats lasted the age of your cats adulthood (which obviously they wouldn't)? Or would the rats try and attack the kitten?

Hopefully the rats would attack the kitten . Bloody filthy creatures ( kittens not rats ) ;)

I had a kitten and rats and the kitten did try to stalk the rats at some point. The rats roamed free and did ruin alot of things ( record covers, clothes, mattresses, furniture) but the kitten didn't seem to really make a go at catching them.

:(

Strumpet, haven't got them yet. I've had a bit of a shitty Xmas/new year period in between family deaths and food poisoning, and now things are beginning to normalise a bit I've just clocked how much course work I have to do in the next 3 weeks! So either Crispy will be sent off to get them on his own, or we'll have to leave it for a bit. There will probably be a naming and picture thread though, if I manage to find where on earth I've put my camera!

I also have to consider that I am not going to get any work done for the first few weeks we have them! :o

Aahhh okie. Sorry to hear about your troubles...:(

I'm not getting any yet....few months....be nice to see your thread when you're ready. :)

I wouldn't buy any animal from a pet shop if my life depended upon it! Lots of animals from different sources put in together = greater risk of spread of disease, also pet shop staff often don't have the time or resources to keep the animals socialised. Getting one from a good breeder will ensure that it has been handled from a young age, and the creature stands a much better chance of being healthy. Actually I think sale of animals through shops should be made illegal, period

Google is your friend ;) and if that doesn't help try looking at other results for 'rat breeder london' on a UK only search.

Look for a breeder that handles their animals so that they are used to interaction with humans, check for clear bright eyes, clean fur/ears/bottom, and that all the animals are kept in clean habitats with fresh water and food, and that the premises don't stink overwhelmingly (a very slight healthy ratty fragrance may be normal if a house has a lot of pet rats though!)

If you do get rats either don't let them be free range or don't have an expensive mountain bike. Hubby was telling me yesterday about a poster whose gf's rat chewed through his brake cables!!
