Where Do People Live?

Well, here in Brixton I live in the upper stories of a terraced house, probably Victorian, tall and thin. It's scruffy as fuck but I like it that way. This is my street. I'm afraid this picture pays more attention to the undercover police raid on the property below us than to the architectural merits of my building, but if I can be arsed I'll get a nice one for you tomorrow JC.

Cheers for that.

An undercover cop here would look just like that one, with the runners, jeans; the only diff would be that he'd have a baseball cap on, and a loose shirt untucked, to conceal the gun.

I don't live in the flats shown here, but on the same estate. I'm a terrace of small houses built in this style in the 1970s. The bedrooms are tiny but the kitchen and living room are a reasonable size. I have a small garden at the back, 13 feet by 26 feet if I remember correctly.

(pic doesn't show all the boats, there are many more below the locks). There are only four houses here, built for British Waterways workers, still being lived in by these workers. I'll find a pic of these houses soon.

I think I know the ones. Nice place to live I reckon. Cracking views.

Our place is just visible in this photo, which is 80 years old. The only visible difference today is the abscence of the advert and the low-level chimneys.

It's over the shops on a busy London high street. The bedroom at the back is quiet, but the front room gets all the noise of the street. On weekends, street preachers and their bands have amplified sermons on the corner. This often annoys.

I used to live next to this fucking montrosity in east London.

A depressing, crumbling building with a bizarre Teletubbie land style garden in the middle.

Two of the local pubs have these nooses - they used to hang pirates and leave em dangling till the Thames tides had covered em a couple of times before disposing of the bodies ...

I live right next to the Basingstoke Canal and got myself filthy dirty yesterday to get these photos.
There are some wonderful houses, with gardens which face right onto the canal. Some are full on mansions still being constructed, others are tiny cottages, there since the building of the canal.

Some canal context- between most of the homes are large stretches of managed coniferous wood and scrubland.

Those last two make me want to go on a stompy winter walk, with a dog, and a pub at the end.

Crispy- you are more than welcome! Byfleet and Weybridge are easily within decent walking distance, and I do it most weekends. Some nice 'country' pubs too. Horsell Common is class for horse/ bike riding and for tramping about.

I took a different route one weekend this past summer and ended up right next to the McLaren building and moat. Public footpaths are the best!

That's cool. There's a place like that on the Fraser River, to the south of town, but it's more floating houses, not boats.

What a weird looking house. And the weather looks great :D

A house in my nan's village in Wiltshire:

It is weird, isn't it? That's why it caught my eye.

Weather was a typical winter day. Today, clear and cold.

Been wanting to post on this for a while, just did not have time, so apologies for the late post. Any case ... Xmas Day, not working, raining, cold and miserable outside, I am bored and have time today, so here goes.

Some posts elsewhere on Urban have reminded me of the somewhat warped perceptions many of us from the "West" have about this country I call home nowadays. This post is one of two attempts at creating a slightly more balanced idea of real, everyday life here. Should you wish to see some more shots of this modern, emerging country, have a look at my flickr account. I plan to post more photos today, one set showing you how crazy Xmas is out here and another looking at religion.

The Old Town, slowly but surely being devoured by an ever growing and rising New Town.

Pockets of Old Town are sadly becoming smaller and smaller. Sad, I say, because an important part of history and culture is being lost with it. It is fair to add, though, that most people living in these older houses are pretty happy about the prospect of living in a fully serviced, new apartment.

Luckily a massive, nation-wide renovation and reservation programme is under way to preserve some of these Old pockets. These preserved pockets see the houses being painted, re-roofed, fully electrified, new water pipes laid to increase water pressure and ablution facilities added to the houses.

Your typical Mom and Dad set-up in the older neighbourhoods. Shop downstairs and family quarters upstairs.
