Where do names come from?

But then having gotten ourselves names, we then went onto surnames. Do some cultures just use a first name, or do they all have a family name?
And what about second and third names? Some of them are names that have always been in the family. One of my names is John. (I actually have three), which my father had, as did my grandfather. My son only has the one name. But his surname is double barrelled. Didn't want to make life too complicated for him!

In Nigeria, surnames are normally related to the tribe your granparents belong to. Some people come from a 'royal family' as rulers of their tribes. Your first name is usually your parents' choice and must 'mean' something to them. My son's first name means ' you bring me joy'. My name means 'i'm complete' hmmm, i still dont quite get that one :D
