Some people get really wound up by that question. There's been a thread about it on here before. I don't get it personally, but then I don't get asked it all the time.

I have asked the question, but only out of interest because someone does not appear to be part of the indigenous population. I have never meant to cause offence and as far as I am aware I never have.

I expect I'll be slated though.

yes, I think it depends on how much shit people have had to deal with because of where they are from, and for how long.

Apart from being attacked by a mad woman in phone box once because 'I wasn't even English' who ordered me to get out of the phone box, and on another occasion being told by a gang of black 'youths' to 'Go back to my country' (I mean, wtf?) - both incidents happened in the early 90s - most people have been quite welcoming and seemed genuinely interested in where I'm from.

But I suppose if I had many more incidents like the ones above I'd be a lot more weary...

I never get wound up by the question, just want to know what exactly people want to know - if that makes sense. If I say Birkenhead, a few other questions usually follow :D

I'm pretty sure I've asked both of you before. :)
Me too! There's nowt wrong with asking - it's just the manner of asking that annoys a few people I know who've been asked - ie 'where are you really from?' or 'where are originally from?'

IIRC the thread on here before was just moaning about the question being asked at all.

Yep, and I'm always happy to answer, just easier to know what people want to know first ;) whether they're asking because of my accent, my looks, my name, or summat else... guess it doesn't really matter, I'm just lazy and want to answer with one word instead of an essay :D

Bristol, but you all knew that

None of the other questions matter.

Don't be mistaken, don't be misled,
We are not scousers, we're from Birkenhead,
You can stuff your cathedral and stuff your pier head,
We are not scousers, we're from Birkenhead......:D

Yeah, 'where are you from originally?', not 'where are you from?'

The 'Where are you from originally?' question is what we are talking about. What I am talking about anyway.

Woolybacks are not from Liverpool, but the surrounding towns like Warrington, Widnes, Wigan and St Helens
Correction

I can speak with absolute authority on this. ONLY St Helens people are woolybacks. Wiganers are pie-eaters. Scousers/Birkkkkkkenheaders are not, never were, and never will be woolybacks - they will keel you if you call them that.

To be fair - I think you get a different opinion on this wherever you're from - some people think it only means people from Skelton on the other side of the country - I think it's used all over by city people to describe bumpkins or smalltowners
