When you hear the words 'South London' what are your first automatic thoughts?

North London:

Er... it's about the same size, and considerably less prosperous!

edit: but infinitely better

Is basically everything south of the river counted as south london? If so, then isn't it about the same size as the rest of london put together, rather than north london alone?

Don't forget us South Norwoodites... we've got an SE postcode too

I used to live on Auckland Road when I was a nipper (up by the junction with Cypress Road, so technically Upper Norwood I think) and I loved it there.

Consulting my mental map [thinks hard] SE London proper begins on Penge Road and Portland Road. West of South Norwood Hill somehow isn't. Maybe you could stretch it as far as Selhurst, but once you've crossed White Horse Road you're definitely out of SE London.

On the flip side, South West somehow doesn't really begin till you've crossed the A24.

This is all completely arbitrary stuff in my head, of course :)

Low rise homogeneous sub urban sprawl marked by an inferiority complex that is the consequence of poor transport links and an associated insular, provincial mentality.

I thought it was St Giles? Ie Covent Garden/Drury Lane endz.
beer alley and gin lane are apparently part of the city, but, as i say, the borough - south of the river - had traditionally been beyond the control of the city authorities and therefore a drinking, whoring and theatrical hub. there were, in early modern times, no theatres north of the river.

Dont forget the bear gardens! South of the Water has always been the place to head for real wrong 'uns.

it used to be home for most of my life.

now it's something i pass through on the train to go home and regularly visit to see friends and families.

Sunday afternoon sex. When I had my early midlife crisis at 28, dumping my girlfriend of 7 years, buying a Merc and going clubbing every weekend, I invariably ended up going home from an afterparty with girls from Clapham, Balham or Crystal Palace.

Great days but the Sunday night or Monday morning journey home in time to pick up the car, get a suit on and get to the office was a nightmare.

Taxis won't go south of the river at night, allegedly. I've never lived south of the river so I've never tried and don't know if it's true or an urban myth. But that's what springs to mind if someone says South London.

Myth. At least, when I was in Streatham, West Norwood, Tooting and flirting with Brixton...
