When Managers get it THAT wrong

tommers said:
did you have schemmel? I always quite liked him when he played for us.

altho he was a bit rubbish, but at least he tried.

I also liked the other guy that harry signed for about 6 months at around the same time, who impressed but then didn't come back after his loan. Was it Tihinen? I get mixed up. Played v.well in that cup win at man u

Petri Pasanen - he was quality but he got CL football with Hamburg.

He's the bloke who gifted Essien that goal on Tuesday :D

The cup games were Liverpool away and the replay at home.

The away game was with the 88 minute equaliser and SMT legging the whole pitch to celebrate in front of the pompey support.

The home replay was Shuggies only goal for the club and Milan Baros (white) claiming that Linvoy Primus (black) had handballed instead of him. Ref nearly gave a pen as well, FFS  Then Owen got tackled well inside the area and the ref gave a soft penalty, Owen gave it to Shaka on his 36th birthday.

I bloody loved that game :D

right Harry aside....

i don't think his howlers really count as there is obviously some alterior motive, at least with some of them. he has his reasons, quite a few thousand of them probably.

it's when managers do it for the right reasons but get it so wrong.

Itzik Zohar the Israeli "international" Crystal Palace signed for £1.25m after watching a videotape of highlights, of him scoring a load of goals, mainly freekicks.

Only it turned out that he was only an Isreali "amatuer" international. You'd think that they'd check the basics ffs

Biggest pile of shite to ever pull on a red and blue shirt.

What about Thomas Brolin, that Danish guy Liverpool signed who turned up several stone overweight?

He's got a bit better since then.

Benjani, Mendes, Davis, Pamarot, Fernandes, Krancjar, Douala, Cole, James, Campbell, Johnson, Thompson......:D

Mendes is quite good.... for a Tottenham reject

According to the BBC sites version of tis topic any signing of Heskey is bad...... I agree!

It was leeds that signed him, realised he was well past it, and then sold him onto Palace. He was too unfit to play, so we ended up making him our manager, so that we at least got something for our money.

Yeah, I realised after I posted that it was, in fact, Leeds...

On a different note, in terms of big-profile signings for big clubs taht have gone majorly wrong, I think Veron and Diego Forlan at Man U are pretty amusing examples

Villa managers named & shamed:

Top one has to be Bosko Balaban. Somewhere in the region of £6m for "Croatia's Michael Owen". Did he ever actually play? (John Gregory)

Michael Boulding. A fucking tennis pro. Hello? (Graham Taylor)

Mark Kinsella. Good at pointing. (Taylor again)

Oyvind Leonardsen. Why? (Taylor again)

Colin Calderwood. Not so much a defender, more of a third goalpost. (Gregory)

Too many to count, but at Lincoln's level a lot of it is about scraping together what you can for free, so it's no surprise a lot of them tend to be rubbish. Worst signing was our biggest ever though (a massive 80k). Tony Battersby, overweight, lazy and egotistical. Easy to pick up better for free.

Would you believe, we paid off Mornars contract this afternoon :D

3 years with the club

12 appearances

1 goal

:D

It was Leeds, and he was Swedish. Never has a Leeds player looked more like a Yorkshire pudding.

Yeah, he played in an away UEFA Cup game (don't know where) which we lost, I think, and of course he didn't score or even look like he could. Might have made a few sub appearances too. Great value for £6.5M and we got fuck all back for him (agreed to terminate his contract early with a nice pay off, natch). But Bosco has done well with Club Brugge - big deal, you might say, in the Belgian league - but he has bagged a few for them in some European games (Champs League even) and for Croatia too. He wasn't as good as we thought he was when we bought him, but he's not as bad as we thought he was when we got rid of him either.

Some other notable Villa flops - Sasa Curcic, Ivo Stas, some Israeli called Grahib or something (the last 2 probably never played a game between them) and, it has to be said, Stanley Victor Colleymore.

But aside from Villa, who was that African (I think) player that Souness signed for one of his clubs, played him for half a match and then realised that the guy simply couldn't play at all!? It was a case of mistaken identity or something.

Jesus. How could I forget Stan Collymore? To be fair to Father Ted (sorry, Brian Little), it did look like a good signing at the time. I don't think many people could have predicted exactly how far down the tubes SVC was going to go, or how quickly.

He's still a lazy arrogant big-headed bastard who can't keep his cock or fists to himself though...

Stan Collymore could have been considered a good signing, he was great for Liverpool, so you can understand why people might sign him, least he had a track record.

Some of these players though prolly thought they had hit jackpot.

I'd love to get signed on 30k a week deal, I'd just go sick till they stopped paying me.

What about that Ali guy Southampton signed on loan (due to a "recommendation" by George Weah which turned out to be non-existent), who played so badly that he got substituted minutes after coming on as a sub himself?

I was just thinking that. On top of that we had Louis Saha on loan. I thought he looked good in the couple of games he played but the Toon didn't seem interested and off he went.
On the other hand, going back a few years what about amazing surprises? Alan Shoulder for instance. You don't get many of them.
Oh yeah...even further. Anyone remember Manyoo buying Ted McDougall from Bournemouth after he scored 11 in a cup tie? And Carlo Satori? Dark days for them in those days.

I'm a Northampton fan so most of our players. :)

In particular Andy Turner who i believe was at Tottenham once and manager Terry Fenwick who signed him and last about 2 weeks in the job.

Anything to do with Souness i.e. any chairman who has employed him and most of the players he's signed.

Andrea Silenzi - oh my god oh my god oh my god.

He cost us 3 million in the end (to sign and get rid of) and he was honestly the worst player I have ever seen. Including me and my mates.
