iirc (which I probably don't) it was banned because the blackmail writing was too Sex Pistols

They are playing "next door" here in Dubai on Friday!

Been a fan since I was ten, but never seen them live. Can't bring myself to see them sans Hugh either.

That said, I will be able to hear them anyway if I am in the flat that evening.

I did actually go see Hugh play a solo set about 18 months ago, in some spanish bar - also in Dubai.

So I am watching/listening from my balcony now, and they are playing Toiler on the Sea (second song, opened with Waltzin' Black)

It sounds...well it sounds like the fucking Stranglers!

Beginning to regret not grabbing a ticket now.

The last time I saw The Stranglers must have been about 1992 with the bloke who replaced Hugh Cornwell. They just seemed like a covers band.

In fact I know nothing of what they've done for the past 16 years.

What do people think of post-Cornwell Stranglers?

Yeah, Hugh's replacement, Paul Roberts, was hopeless and apart from the title track on 'Norfolk Coast' most of the material they recorded with him was shite too.
Roberts was replaced by Baz Warne a couple of years ago. The current line-up is a mighty good live act and their 'Suite XI' lp is well worth a listen.

Hard to choose my favourite single, probably one of these: Something Better Change, Five Minutes, No More Heroes, Golden Brown...
