What's your favourite musical?

It's hardly a very original stance, many people these days (especially straight men) don't get musicals because they are unwilling to engage with their extreme stylisation.

ooh, get her

:p

Like I said, I dislike most musicals (with the exception of the ones I mentioned) however, I have would not dismiss a movie out of hand just because it was a musical. A good movie is a good movie.

I am not going to analyse why I don't like em - it's just coz.

I'm a straight man and I love musicals, though I think most modern ones are whack.

There is always the exception that proves the rule. :) Most straight men I know are very vocal about their dislike of musicals though.

Fair enough. I don't like football, but don't feel compelled to go on the football forum to let everybody know about it.

I like musicals too, though just some old ones - I don't like the look of that Sweeney Todd one Burton's just made with Depp

Well you should - I do.

:p

Still, the question was "what are your favourite musicals" which I answered fully, adding the caveat that these were however fairly exceptional as I don't like many examples of the genre.

Not exactly outside of the boundaries of the thread eh?

:)

..but I was anwering to RenegadeDog's redundant contribution in the first place, which you then decided to followed up on. I thought it was perfectly fine that you stated what your fave musicals are. I took you up on what you had to say and thought you contribution was fine, even if I didn't agree.

Ooh, just remembered another musical that people will say isn't a musical, especially if they don't like musicals but like this film: Oh Brother Where Art Though?

A good film but not a musical as such :p

I don't even remember any more.

I think we should probably stop now.

If only the Wickerman was a musical. It's a well known fact that all musicals are unbearably twee, with the kind of fatuously linked songs that make most grown men want to rip their heart out through their anal canal.

It's two most successful exponents of late are Andrew Lloyd Webber and fecking Ben Elton. What does that tell you eh?

Musicals are the devil's own work

  ;)

Mmm .. so you not counting Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Schwartz, Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman..?

I saw the Tim Burton film of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd the other day and I think it's one of the best musical films ever made. It gets the mixture between opening out the play to make it more cinematic while still keeping it stylised exactly right and it wipes the floor with every major musical film made over the last decade or two. Anybody who thinks that musicals are all twee and saccharine should check this out, it's one of the most gruesome and blood drenched films in quite a while and it builds to an intensely bleak and violent climax.
