What's your favourite musical?

Hurrah for The Wickerman and I'd also like to add Bugsy Malone.

Does Zatoichi count? It's kind of musical especially the last scene.

I do have a soft spot for musicals. :o

Reading South Pacific and The King and I, I'd forgotten about those!!

Oklahoma, Le Cage Aux F??, Les Mis, Phantom, Mary Poppins, Spamalot, Wicked, Cats, Anything Goes, Fame, oh there's too many!!

Actually, my all time favourite has to be Annie.

I forgot to mention Jerry Springer, The Opera...

"Thiiiiissss is my Jerry Springer Momeeeeent"
:D

That one was hysterical!!

And someone mentioned Little Shop of Horrors? And Rocky Horror Picture Show? And I saw Gypsy and liked it. The list goes on and on...

Maybe we should have an urban trip to the west end. Or a musical dvd night?

But no Grease, can't stand that one anymore.

So what makes a musical a musical? Why isn't wickerman a musical? Does the film have to meet a certain music to dialogue ratio?

In a Musical the actors sing - it doesnt just mean it has music in or everything would be a musical.

I figure a musical has to have song and dance routines that are part of the narrative rather than a backing track.

So wickerman qualifes and so does Zatoichi if only for the last song.

I love musicals :) NOT Chitty Chitty Bang Bang though

Did anyone else see the Prisoner: Cell Block H musical? It was fantastic!

Jeez...it couldnt have had the same old skool characters in it?

Could it?

Oh...has anyone seen 'Porno, the Musical?' Had an old local boozer in it cos it was part live music venue, was part strip club too.

The Prisoner musical starred Lily Savage, but featured several key cast members...including The Freak! :D She did a brilliant number about her leather gloves and what a pervy sadist she was :D

Only seen a few episodes of the original Prisoner...was on a bit too late for me as a kid. I remember it being quite violent though.. Prisoner was the ORIGINAL Oz! :D

Gotta be West Side Story - I was the 'heavenly voice' singing 'Somewhere' in our school production. :D Luckily we had a great music department, so we were able to put it on - it's difficult stuff. The music is just brilliant.

Sondheim's 'Sweeney Todd' is fantastic too - it's almost an opera, though. Sang in the chorus of that at uni.

Return to the Forbidden Planet was great - requires a mega-talented chorus. And Jerry Springer was superb - all in the worst possible taste.

Who says?

Anyone who isnt a cretin :D are you really suggesting that any film with music in is a musical? :D

Wikipedia has a fari definition imo

The musical film is a film genre in which several songs sung by the characters are interwoven into the narrative. The songs are used to advance the plot or develop the film's characters. A subgenre of the musical film is the musical comedy, which includes a strong element of humour as well as the usual music, dancing and storyline.

The musical film was a natural development of the stage musical. Typically, the biggest difference between film and stage musicals is the use of lavish background scenery which would be impractical in a theater. Musical films characteristically contain elements reminiscent of theater; performers often treat their song and dance numbers as if there is a live audience watching. In a sense, the viewer becomes the deictic audience, as the performer looks directly into the camera and performs to it.

Your right about The Wicker Man in that they do sing at the sacrifice, you seriously believe that is enough to make it a Musical though?

Yes, just a shame it isnt a musical.

People bursting into song and dance every 5 minutes with the musical numbers enhancing plot and characters of course The Wicker Man is a musical that conforms to all the conventions. It just happens to be a horror film as well.

I think all the songs in The Wicker Man support and even advance the plot and the characters and in this sense it's a musical.

Maybe I'm thinking of a different whicker man but I can only remember the characters singing once, when they've god Woodward into the Wicker Man.

Couldnt you argue that about many films that arent usually considered Musicals?

Nah, there's loads of it in the pub (The Landlord's Daughter) and then there's Willow's Song when Woodward's being tempted. Then there's Corn Rigs, The Maypole, Gently Johnny etc etc
