What's your favorite Anime?

today i watched some of my old stuff i burnt to disk ... i watched

Love Hina - comedy romance with a fair amount of fanservice
Puni Puni Poemi - maho shojou parody with even more fanservice
Ebichu - sex, violence and talking hampsters
Maria-sama ga Miteru (MariMite) - barly restrained lesbian schoolgirls
Kore ga watashi no goshujin-sama (he is my master) - maid comedy for anime geeks
Jungle wa itsumo hale notchi guu - surreal comedy... really fucked up
Dai mouge touge - maho shojou parody where the magic girl relies more on her stupid strench and joint breaking moves
kyou kare ore wa - school punk comedy

and posibly a few episodes of some others

all of these are fairly good

akira, ghost in the shell, nausicaa valley of the wind, princess mononoke - all the popular ones really. not a massive fan of the genre, but akira is fucking class.

I can't understand why most of the shat posted in this thread is so popular.

Because it is all the "shat" that has made the crossover and is easily availble in the West and the "shat" you can then watch, enjoy and understand without having to develop a prior encyclopaedic and trainspotterish knowledge of Anime/Manga and Japanese language and culture.

:p

By yours and Shippys admission a lot of the more obscure stuff - providing you even know what to buy and where to find it in the first place - can be rather impenetrable and involve a lot of "in jokes" or cultural references/nuances which the majority of people won't understand.

I never said that did I?

It's the odd stuff I like, it doesn't have to contain cultural references. In fact I would say the more I know about in-jokes and culture etc the less interesting it is. I like random weirdness but if you find this is a common cultural reference it becomes less crazy after a while.

Anyway I can't off the top of my head think of any cultural references etc in anything I have listed that add or take away from the cartoon. FLCL is bonkers however you look at it; I think it's just that madness in adult cartoons has gone further in the east as it is generally more accepted over there. This means that if I want bonkers cartoons I need to look to Japan because thundercats just doesn't cut it for me.

Mind you it's not just mad cartoons that are interesting, check out.

O'Mikey
Ski Jumping pairs
Ika wrestler
Kaso taisho

As for finding stuff I don’t really look too hard, but I do watch a lot of TV and enjoy a good rummage around HMV when I am in Japan.

totally understandable

love hina and aa megumisama are totally diffrent tyes of anime to ebichuu they focus partly on romance and partly on light comedy so they can fell fairly fucking sacarine at times (well AMG can love hina was never THAT romantic more just perverted)

Tank police and bubble gum crisis very good .
Both are dull as dishwater IMO. I fell asleep watching both in the 80s (true). I had them all on video but could never get though them without nodding off. I always meant to have another crack at BGC but I think the moment has passed.

I did have a friend who went to live in Japan because he liked the cat girls in Tank Police in about 1990. He is still there.

This isn't a recommendation, just share your own favorites, if you want to.

Well my favourite anime show is Perfect Hair Forever. I think it captures the essence of the genre perfectly.

I also like most of what ATOMIC SUPLEX posted.

Why? Dystopia, fast bikes, slick animation, fucked up hallucinations, and shit dialogue - it is a cyberpunk classic :D

Doma's not bad either.

Humm I don't know, I just never really liked it, even in the days when it was the only anime video in the UK. The manga is much better (different story too). Its a shame we don't get more manga like that over here, it's as if everyone is shippy and just wants the 'girl goes to school and turns into a fish and has a love triangle' manga.

Good to see you are all back to Firky again. Sorry for being way too drunk last Saturday, next time I will try to get a chat in early.

Oh and don't forget your Firky T-Shirt and we will do a swap.

oi oi!

thats practically slander

i have a love for a wide range of anime from the deep to the twisted to the mindlessly shallow .... i just happen to really like shallow perverted comedy

plus sex and violence sells thats why they load up the shelves with them... it's somewhat sad but you can think of them as gateway anime

But when I pop into forbidden planet these days there is nothing that tickles my fancy.
I want to read MPD Psycho or 20th Century boy or itchi the killer.
Actually even some of the childish good (but not high school) manga like papwa kun.

Having said that, I really wish someone would do the rest of urusei yatsura and print every story in order. I guess Viz still have the rights and can't be bothered (even though it is Rumiko Takahashi!!!!). Another company did it with Maison Ikkoku (and much better than the viz books, shame I already have them) so you never know.

Thats scary:eek: .bubblegum crisis & tank police fun stuff but hardly something
to base a life changing descion on.

yep to be honest forbidden planet is sopmewhat shit for buying manga amazon have a fairly good selection and at least don't have half the volumes missing.

hummm i wonder when thier licence runs out... vis are helishly crap when it come to manga ... and really love to flip it ... same with darkhorse ... tokyo pop are reasonable quality wise but sometimes do horible re-writes of the jokes. del ray actully do a damn good vertion of negima and i would quite like to see what they have done with xxxholic

it's fairly pot luck i guess....

i wonder what he would have done if he saw masamune shirow's porn stuff

possibly explode

well after seeing all you lot going on about it i went and got dead leaves ...

pretty bloody good for insane fighting....

but

to be honest it needed a little something more that's why i prefer stuff like FLCL and the gainax remake of cutie honey they have a style similar to that (fight wise anyhow and re: cutie honey especially) but also have far more plot/character development/fan love

though this does stand as a marker for where to push boundries

Yeah, Dead Leaves was one of those quality finds i just happened to come across by accident. It couldn't really have much more character development, etc considering it's length, without sacrificing the goodness it has.

IMO it's one of those really original films that sticks in your mind - alot of anime over the years, despite some of it being really good, has tended to find it's self being stored among the anime that doesn't have any sort of defining characteristics.

Dead Leaves is insane.

The ending reminded me of many of my acid trips, not sure quite what it was, it just seemed to really capture that, oh shit whats going on in my head, feeling.

Altho funny story, on the DVD there is 2 sound channels and one of them is like, 30 secs out of sync, and my mate watched the entire DVD stoned off his face, with the sound 30 secs out of sync. Brought it round and said....wow this is the most bizzare thing I have ever seen, visually stunning, but you won't know what the fuck is going on.

I put it on for like 5 mins and said, man the sound is out of whack, checked the player, choose the other sound track and started it and again and he just sat there with his jaw dropped saying, fuck can't believe I watched the whole damn thing like that!

I think it's pretty good but no FLCL.

Didn't manga video US commition it, just asking for a crazy anime? The UK dvd is stacked with what you expect of a regular J disk yet the J disk is in fact pretty vannilla.

same here it has good animation (well distinctive anyhow) and it is good fun but it just lacks ... that je ne sais quois

and that could well be true
you can tell it's the guys at IG having a laugh

just watching tamala interesting in a "Felix the cat meets 2001 via Fritz the Cat" kinda way

due to having a dubious rip i appear to have the French version (unless that's the normal version as they do have a French bit in it) so i get French and English subs ... and the translation appears to have gone via the French

it does seam to be using an apretiation of classic western animation with the art style and bits such as the calssic doors gag when she is looking for the loo

a lot of art students in this one you can tell... the neko Hieronymus Bosch is a laugh reminds me of the short cuts manga (Usamaru Furuya) which has a lot of interesting art
Ashikaga bakufu console the original sistine chapel the garden of earthly delights

heh and they obviously have a thing for levi

opss hit the wrong button half way through...

i'll post up more later (i'm only about a third through)

actully not much more i can say about it

it was interesting and different ... but i don't feel any love towards it

Shippou-Chan said:

Then you are a fool.

She does say a couple of things in French like 'bonjour' but I don't remember much more.
There is a point when they do a long dialogue to try and explain who Tamala is which grates a little but apart from that I love it. It's much more my thing as opposed to video girl ai etc.

The music is cool to and the J DVD has loads of fun stuff on it and looks great.

How can you not love a film where the main character dies about half way through?

because i have different taste from you?

the music is cool and it is as i said fairly different and interesting ... but... i guess i lacked empathy for the characters.

and just because i like it as interesting art doesn't mean i like it as a good story

nor does it mean i am a fool

Shippou-Chan said:

Easy tiger I was only kidding.
I know it's not to eveyones taste.

anyway I had video girl ai on video and loved it. I can't bare it now though.
Tamala 2010 appeals to me because I like the odd stuff, to be fair there is not much else to it.
A few years ago I even tried to by the UK rights for the DVD release, but they fucked around and kept telling me someone else was bidding, which they obviously were not seeing as there has been no release. They were very pushy and a bit rude.
I even made a bid for FLCL and to do a UK dub for channel 4 (who nearly went for it) before sync point got it.
There was also a programme that I actually cut a pilot for that mixed a load of Japanese shows up like skits from vermillion pleasure night and kaso tasho (who I became quite friendly with, it is my ambition to appear on the show one day).

sorry first thing in the morning (for me) i hadn't remembered to put on my protective layer of cynicism and humour

not actually seen the video girl ai OVA i only ever read the manga ... and to be brutally honest a lot of it is mediocre i just had got so used to the characters by the end of it I ended up feeling their pain somewhat.

i too like odd stuff but i prefer it when it is mixed in with what could be considered normal ... i mean you can construct something that is completely and utterly loopy and makes no sense but where the point in that? (apart from just having a laugh/looking cool) but when you take what seams normal then warp it to breaking point you have something special ... possibly ... i may be talking out my arse again.

a uk DUB?? i have lost all respect for you! the mixed show thing sounds intresting a bit 2am tv though
