What's wrong with speed bumps?

They are used as planners cannot be bothered, or don't have the resources, to put in decent traffic calming measures. They should design streets for people from the start, rather than designing them for cars and then as an afterthought install speed ramps as folk drive too fast.


There are a few villages in Brittany where they have ripped up all the pavements and removed most of the street "furniture", and priority signage. This means you are too shit scared of having an accident to drive at more than 10mph.
 
Since when has a constant walking pace been anywhere near 30mph? It's primarily caused by drivers having a complete inability to drive at a steady speed, instead doing the acceleration/brake/decceleration routine.

5-10's optimum depending on how crappily they've been implemented.
 
What do people think about the dual posts that get erected with very narrow clearance between them, so that you have to slow right down to squeeze through? They don't fuck your undercarriage, but I've lost a couple of wing mirrors when misnavigating.

I've only seen them in Finchely's Nether Street, so I don't know how prevalent they are.

They put-up a load of them here a few years back but most if not all of the ones on roads have since been removed. IME, only the ones at car parks remain.

TBH, they didn't stop drivers putting the foot down as soon as they were through & most were mangled frequently. Think traffic bunching-up to go into them may have had an untoward congestion/pollution issue as well?

Aren't they just meant to stop wide loads from accessing narrow or windy routes?

half the problem is they are made the wrong size.
whats easy to design in the office is a bit harder to put together on a road and being a bit ish with the measurements ends with wrecking cars
 
They are just the cheap method to the actually sensible idea of snaking the road so its impossible to do any more than 20 or you'll crash the car. I think that is what they introduced in parts of Amsterdam.

Running narrow roads next to canals, in some cases with only cursory attempts at guard-rails, probably makes the drivers pretty circumspect.

Actually your right, if we put things like Skate and BMX parks, kids playgrounds, coffee tables etc in the middle of a street, with just enough room for drivers to negotiate, they might realise that the street is a public space, and priority goes to children playing and pedestrians first, then cyclists, and they can only move forward with their permission, not as a matter of right.

Really hate it when cars wanting to overtake when I am signaling to turn right on a shopping street when it is obviously a place for people to be and not for transport flow. They usually make no effort to slow down, but rather blow their horns, then I notice them speed by shaking their heads as though I was wrong. Then of course having risked my life they sit for 10 mins at the end of the road at the next junction. It is drivers attitudes that need changing. They have almost no rights of passage on a street, they must share the space and 5mph is about the correct speed to go.

What a load of unmitigated bollocks.

So the gap between buildings was designed purely as a communal chat/play space?

Drivel - it was for the passage of vehicles - that's why Roman streets such as those found in Pompeii have stepping stones spaced at the correct gauge to facilitate standard gauge ox waggons and carts.

Kiddies wouldn't have been happily playing in the middle of the road during the Renaissance as it was still flowing with ordure from horsepowered vehicular traffic.

Streets are for vehicles, paths are for pedestrians, gardens and parks are for playing in.

Speed bumps are a crap way of slowing down traffic. They damage vehicles, make life difficult for the emergency services, and people who don't much care about hammering their suspension tend to ignore them anyway. Either that, or accelerate between them and end up using more fuel. Speed cameras, chicanes and suchlike are just as good for controlling speed and don't create as many problems.
 
They are incredibly damaging. I waste loads of fuel going long ways round to avoid roads which have them, as the underside of my car catches on them, and they scrape the inside of my alloys. In addition, most of them round here are in poor condition, with potholes on either side, and loose bricks and chippings on the top.

I might have to drive on the pavement to avoid the worst offenders near work.
