What's the worst thing that ever happened?

The invention of agriculture.

Think about it: it led directly to
- Humans eating stuff they're not evolved for
- the beginnings of surplus hoarding, hence money and exchange economies and the beginning of social classes
- people being tied to a particular bit of land - hence feudalism, classism, nationalism
- backbreaking toil for whoever was the underdog in any human group
- ruin of the environment, species extinction
- earlier and increased fertility (i.e. breeding 'til you drop) for women
- formal concepts of marriage ('nuff sed!)

No wonder some social scientists call it the 'Great Leap Backward' in human evolution.

Plus side, however: bread. and rice. and barley. and pommes dauphinoise an' that.

That's tosh. The ability to do agriculture and eat the stuff produced are evolutionary advantages. If eating this stuff caused people to drop dead before procreating, then, well I suppose there wouldn't be any agriculture.

I was going to write the Rwandan Genocide, but that's for more personal reasons. Anyway, I think genocide, any genocide, must rank as one of the worst things ever.

i was thinking that this was one of the worst things as well

also the reinstatement of the death penalty and state killings sends a terrible message, as do the reemergence of places such as Bagram and Guantanamo Abu Gharib
