What's the prognosis for the 'burlesque' scene?

I just want to slap up (heh) the link to one of the best burlesque troupes I've seen:

http://www.harlemshakeburlesque.com/

They're based in San Francisco. Maybe they'll make it to London at some stage.

They've done their research, so they're saucy and sassy; but very connected to the lineage/intersection of jazz and burlesque and very aware of representations and influences of black women in US performance history.

I've noticed this a bit in Manchester of late -- random club or band nights seem to have "...and a burlesque troupe" tacked onto the end of the bill, almost as an afterthought. Some, but not all, of it is absolutely bloody awful; about as suggestive and entertaining as a rainy weekend in Widnes. I guess when something's in fashion, you're bound to get some hangers-on who aren't actually that good but are cashing in. There are some decent things going on though; there was something on Valentine's night that was quite diverting.

Ethically, I'm ever so slightly concerned about it, but not on the same level as I am about, say, the plethora of lap-dancing clubs opening in disadvantaged places like Stoke. I think the fact that the people doing it seem to be enjoying it on the whole makes it a lot more palatable. It still wouldn't be my first choice of a night out, though :)

The death knell sounds....

I'm delighted to annouce that a local leisure centre in this grim northern town is now offering Burlesque Keep Fit, including pole dancing and chair work with Trisha :D

Loads of local dance studios are offering workshops in erotic dance / burlesque / strip tease / pole dancing.

Just the other day I walked past my local dance studio from which woman was leaving carrying several stacked silver chairs all draped in feather boas

:)

Pre Wed night in April

I went to Viva Cake at Bethnal Green Working Men's club last year for a friends pre wed night. It was mixed bill, bit burlesque, grotesque rock roll, jive lessson and the best bit - afternoon tea served by the roller girls. We were mid 30's onwards enjoying a vintage dress up nostalgia night. Just the right tone. Hope you find the right place and time for you.

I'm going to Flash Monkey on April 5 (Thursday night before Good Friday) www.theflashmonkey.biz - haven't been before, but I understand from some Urbanites that it's good.

They've been doing it for quite a long time and aim to have acts no one else has, plus they insist on live music to be more in the spirit of the original thing, which is good.

Dirty Martini
One of the most celebrated burlesque performers in the US

Maybe a little slimmer , but your curves are all in the right place :)

BTW is anyone going to that burlesque charity auction on Friday afternoon in Soho?

It's even made it to Congleton -- someone running classes out of the town got on telly and the front page of the Evening News  :D
