What's the most disturbing (also good) book you've read?

Oh, and The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold

The lovely bones was only disturbing in as much as it was utter shit. I was actually very disturbed after reading it to find that so many people thought it was a good book.

Have you read the book? It's mostly very refreshing and full of candour about his twatty behaviour :) Completely changed my mind about him - I'd previously disliked him on account of said behaviour

I don't know anything about him apart from his disturbing dress sense and his horrible voice and his weird obsession with ancient stones. I have a mild phobia of hippies. The smell of patchouli oil makes me tremble.

Ah but he's not a hippy, he's a druid! ;) :D

The most disturbing book I ever read was Elect Mr Robinson for a Better World by Donald Antrim.

Grim :o

I wouldn't recommend it though - although many on t'internet do.

I am a bit scared about reading American Psycho later this year. I don't like gore and stuff.

I can't believe no one else on this thread has read any Sade

I have, but I didn't find it that disturbing. It was like a big sexy comic. I've only read Juliette and Justine though, not 120 Days Of Sodom or whatever it's called.

I did find the bit where Juliette gets her dad to do her up the arse and then shoots him in the head at the moment of orgasm faintly disturbing, but then it just made me laugh :o

American Psycho - awesome book.

Reading his Lunar Park now which is basically about Bret Easton Ellis going insane.

:D Try 120 days then, and let me know how you get on, I can pretty much guarantee you'll be wanting to vomit within the first 50 pages!

Theres a couple of minging bits in that.

Got to agree with that, 'The Room' was probably the most disturbing book I've read too. Good though.

I didn't know Sade wrote books as well. I really enjoyed 'Diamond Life' so I must check out the novels.

Yes, do :) It was a side of her that she never really brought out on top of the pops - understandably so, what with most of it being illegal and all...

I always found Lord of the Flies very disturbing.

The other book, Lucky, by Alice Sebold (author of Lovely bones) is also quite disturbing. I've tried re-reading the first chapter several times but am unable to as it just feaks me out too much.

Why are people picking Life Of Pi?
I can't remember it being disturbing - I just remember it being a sweet but rather vapid fable.

Good word to describe it, though rather polite. I wouldn't be as polite, and it's most definitely not disturbing, unless all you've ever read in life is Baa Baa Black Sheep, repeatedly

And who can forget lord of the flies:(

Yeah - we did this for O-Level English Literature. Our teacher took great relish in reading the gory bits.

How about Dr Bloodmoney ( or how we got along after the Bomb ) by Phillip K Dick ?
