What's the difference between telecasters and stratocasters?

Teles have a great garagey trashy quality. Strats sound too clean and widdly. Giants like Hendrix, Gallagher and Mould have done wonders with them but in the wrong hands (Knopfler, Clapton, Gilmour, wedding bands) they are a menace to the spirit of rock.

No Teles. :D

Is that a Baritone on the right or a Jag HH?

Neither. It's actually a Framus Jaguar/Jazzmaster copy, like this one (same year). It's an oddment that I picked up, oh, 20 years ago and it's stuck with me. Bigsy-esque trem, split coil Burns hummers under the plates, so pretty versatile, really nice to play and it sounds great.

There ain't many of them about.

Did, sold it, bought a Slimline Tele. :)

And well done to you. I fucking hate strats, I've gone through all the pickup settings six ways to sunday trying to find the 'doesn't sound like a mouse farting gently' setting, but to no avail. Even the shitest squier tele can cut through steel plating when you put it on the bridge pickup and turn the fucker up

I love my strat. and my verithin. and my pink 12string daisyrock. and yes i am boasting.

sorry.

So you're the one who bought the pink daisy?

in the nicest kind of way :o

So then Dapper, which are you going to buy ?

I finally got round to going round guitar shops today. I was unimpressed with the epiphone shit. A yamaha that I tried (RX something) was particularly shit, surprisingly, as I have a great acoustic yamaha in roughly the same price range.

Now then.

The salesman was a strat man, and I couldn't fault him on his original assertion that strats are really versatile... he went through the whole spectrum of genres on it, but when I tried it, I just wasn't feeling the vibe.

Tele, in comparison was an absolute gem to play - so much easier to twiddle down the neck, much warmer sound etc. (looks a fuck of a lot cooler too). I can't help but think that its my deficiencies as a guitarist in wanting to plump for the scuzz of the tele, (in fact I do quite want a strat as well) but I think it'll have to be the tele for the time being...

Chacan a son gout 'n' that, may your tele bring you many many hours of geetarring pleasure Dapper :D

I've got a US Tele (black and white) and a US Strat (blond).

I get more versatile sounds from the Strat and tend to use it as my 'back up' guitar (like I'm a fucking pro....lmao) when gigging. My main guitar is a Gibson Nighthawk.

I find the Tele easier to play, though - I have very average sized hands for a guitarist.

Fiddling with the pick up selector and tone control, the Tele doesn't have to be a twang/country/jangle pop instrument.

The Tele was the first instrument I was able to afford brand new. :D I thought and still sometimes think I am Joe Strummer (RIP).

All guitars play differently. Even guitars made on the same production line from the same stock of wood. Keep trying them out until you find one which suits you. Don't be harrassed or hassled by pushy sales staff.

A guitar is for life. :)
