What's the best way to go brown?

I really cant have brown legs, they are so white they repel the suns rays, the rest of me can be boiling and going pink and my legs will feel cold to the touch :D

yes, what is that about? my legs (particularly shins) are completely resistant to tanning or burning - most odd.

anyway. the year i had a suntan (unemployed):

every day from may til september i went up onto the flat roof of our flats and did 20 mins on my front and twennty minutes on my back. then came back down and avoided the sun the rest of the time. No sunscreen, gradual build-up, deep tan.

all suntans are skin damage - there is no healthy tan unless from a bottle / spray gun - but this is how i did it.

here is a picture of me with my tan. stupd facial expression is not related to tan.

actually, i do look rather grubby of face.

I went horseriding in the Black Mountains over the past 4 days. I now have a white skin vest because I didn't wear any sunscreen on the friday

I look like a fucking berk. Again...
I did something similar last year - I go brown fast but don't pay attention to how and where I'm tanning so end up with bloody farmer tans.

As Ceej said, Johnsons Holiday Skin is the business. It's body moisturiser with fake tan in it, it builds up over 3-4 days, doesn't streak (because it builds up gradually) and doesn't smell like fake tan.
And it doesn't mark clothes.
You can't go wrong.

I'm sure I've seen somewhere that one of those mineral foundation products can give you a fake tan. Is that not worth a try Madz?

Will PM you Madzone :D:cool:

There is stuff you can take and things you can do, fake tans unless professionally done are a pain in the arse and look shite imo.

madz, a decent tan takes time and patience, even for those of us who go brown if we so much as get 1 ray of sunshine in a bleak winter.

If you're really going to do it, start off with a medium level suntan lotion SPF20-15, and stick with this for 3-7 days (assuming you're in the sun for at least 4 hours a day - I find that early morning and after 3/4pm is best), then see if you're starting to brown. If you aren't, stick with it for another week or so and by this point if you aren't browning you probably won't tan that well.

If you are, drop the SPF again to 10-5, and stick with that another couple of weeks - by this point you should be nicely browned, but more than that because of the long prep work at a higher SPF, it'll be a tan that should give you colour for a good while.

DC - go to Australia or New Zealand during the summer and sit out in the sun about 1pm for 30 minutes - you will burn. Quickly. In fact, you'll probably feel your skin toasting just under the surface...

Thanks :)

Srlsy tho madz - time and patience; try and go to low an SPF too soon and you will burn and undo pretty much everything you've managed until then. You'll also find, as others have mentioned, that some bits of your bod take ages to tan/never burn. In my case my calves and outer thighs have never burned, even when left out in NZ and Aussie sunlight - but there's a spot in the middle of my chest that is the last part of me to tan, and the first to fade...how bizarre is that?

The dilemma facing me now is I can either go upstairs to get the sunscreen or I can go out to the garden. Can't do both :hmm:

I've just found one of the kids SPF 25 things stuffed down the side of the sofa (slovernliness pays dividends) I can't bring myself to put it on - it just doesn't make sense :(

Watch me, I'm going out!

Stick it on - you'll be able to stay out in the sun for ages, and while you won't 'tan' you will still be getting some rays, which is good vit E and all that...alth oI shar eyou aversion to anyting higher than 20, at least when I'm in the UK...

What Kyser said basically - prolonged exposure with high factor sun screen. Earlier and later in the day is better even if just because if its properly sunny it's too hot to be in the sun for a long enough period in the middle of the day.

Always err on the side of caution with the factor of sunscreen - better for it to take longer than to get burned and undo all the good work.

There's no point going out now. It's nice and cool out there
