What's the best veggie dish??? (Curry excluded as it is an automatic winner)

Oooh, that might work, you know. Let's patent it, get some cash from Deborah Meaden and test market it in the Med.

Already been done :( There's a deli on Charing Cross Road (Gaby's?) that does a lovely houmous+pitta+felafel+salad combo. Best with loads of those pickled green chillies on top too

I know the one. I've tried drunkenly to haggle with them many a time over arcane salt-beef-sarnie/falafel combos and they just look at me through pitying hooded eyes and charge rack rate.

what's up with all the vegetarians on here? :p

now i feel like starting a meat-eaters only thread

Veggie dishes are yum!

Vegan stuff however is dull after 6 weeks.

There's only so long that I could possibly live without cheese/cream/butter/eggs.

You need eggs to make fried breaded butter nut squash + curry sauce. Eggs and butter for nice cake. Egg for any kind of batter.

Cheese for pizza!

Imagine no grilled tikka Halloumi on your BBQ (that was a great idea by whoever gave it to me here a year ago!).

I think it could quite simply be roasted butternut squash, tossed in a bit garlic olive oil, some cracked pepper and a bit of green pesto. Served with crusty bread and some steamed spinach (with parmesan and crushed chilli).

Lush!

Parmesan veggie is it? I thought they used animal rennet in it?

I like ratatouille

firky you need to get yourself some veggie *parmesan* - Twineham grange is the best - you can get it in Sainsbury's and probably that posh Waitrose you go to ;)

Home made spinacha and cottage cheese lasagne. Or, depending on the time of year, loads of roasted veg and a few stuffing balls in a big yorkshire pudding with onion or mushroom gravy.

sounds lush - how do you make stuffing balls (please tell me you don't use a packet?!) same goes for mushroom gravy???

That's not real parmesan though is it? Isn't it just labelled 'italian cheese' :D

Simple tings like roasted butternut squash soup made with leeks, potatoes, carrots, lentils and of course lots of roasted butternut squash and thyme.

I do sometimes use packet stuffing, but will add nuts and herbs and stuff to it. I often make it from scratch though, but tbh, if I've put the effort in, I tend to mix it with lentils and stuff and make a loaf.
With the gravy I do tend to use some granuals, but will add onions, mushrooms, herbs, wine and sometimes make my own stock :)

Ask crustychick for her BNS, spinach and mushroom lasagne recipe. It is quite possibly one of the best dishes I have ever had in my life - it is THAT good :)

dont' be so hasty. (fruli is still on as are all beers imo) it's all about personal choice and reasons for being vegetarian... it's why some people cross the line into veganism and some don't. There are a whole host of other little things like that which are less obvious and the lines are more blurred. These include (but are not limited to) gelatin, rennet and isinglass.

lots of cheeses are made with animal rennet... but lots aren't. many will tell you on the pack (such as Sainsbury's own brand - if they dont' have a green V then they aren't!), many won't... it's up to you how far you want to take your vegetarianism.

I won't eat non-veggie cheese if I can help it/know about it as rennet is made of fucking calf's stomachs - bleurgh. but I wont' go questioning every bloody waiter in a restaurant if every cheese they use is veggie.

Non-veggie beers I avoid if I know about them. But I have less of a problem with fish bladders than calf's stomachs (for some reason) and perhaps I'm more addicted to beer than to cheese ;) there is usually no isinglass left actually in the beer anyway..... [/attempted justification of personal vegetarianism]

honestly - try the twineham grange stuff - you'll not notice the difference...

sorry, long post :o

Here's the recipe for that curry I made tonight firks, piece of piss.

It's spicy, sweet, sour, oh man, best dinner I've had in ages.

  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 small butternut squash cut into chunky bite size cubes
  • couple of handfuls of cooked chickpeas (maybe about 1 tin of tinned chickpeas... drain and rinse first if using)
  • tin of tomatoes and their juice, blenderized
  • 2tsp tomato puree
  • tamarind juice (rub a 1" cube of wet tamarind with your fingers in about 1/4 pint warm water til all the flavour is extracted, or use tamarind paste mixed with warm water)
  • curry spice mix (4tsp garam masala, 1tsp cumin, 1tsp coriander, 1tsp paprika 1tsp turmeric)
  • 2 whole chillis de-seeded
  • 1 whole garlic clove
  • handful of flatleaf parsley
  • salt to taste

Erm... I think thats it

so first sautee your onion, garlic, chilli and squash in oil over low heat til the onion's soft and translucent.

add spice mix, stir until that wonderful pungent spice flavour is released

add blenderized tomatoes, tomato puree, chickpeas, tamarind juice. bring to boil, simmer over low heat for half an hour or until squash is tender.

served garnished with chopped flatleaf parsley, with brown rice.

de-f'king-licious.

i wonder if some fresh ginger would have improved this,... hmmm maybe. and how about a wedge of lime to garnish... fuck knows

You can't beat boiled onions IMO.

I remember coming out of a club every week and buying boiled onion rolls from the Hotdog van. The smell of those farts:eek:

I am most partial to veggie chilli, but a good Macaroni cheese with mushrooms, courgette, spinach and sundried tomatoes is nice too.
