I voted for Fear and Loathing but really like 12 monkeys as well. Brazil is a bit shit in my opinion but I know that a lot of people like it. A word to the wise; do not watch his latest film Tideland, its absolute cack!

Really?

'After her mother dies from a heroin overdose, Jeliza-Rose is taken from the big city to a rural farmhouse by her father. As she tries to settle into a new life in a house her father had purchased for his now-deceased mother, Jeliza-Rose's attempts to deal with what's happened result in increasingly odd behavior, as she begins to communicate mainly with her bodiless Barbie doll heads and Dell, a neighborhood woman who always wears a beekeeper's veil.'

Sounds ace! What's wrong with it?

(Then again, I fear you're not to be trusted: "Brazil is a bit shit in my opinion" indeed :p )

Ha, I know I am in the minority when it comes to Brazil even though I do count myself as a fan of Gilliam. However, Tideland is one of the worst films I watched last year. The idea is ok, a fucked up take on Alice in Wonderland kind of thing and should be perfect material for Terry G to play with bu the film is totally unwatchable and often feels like an episode of sesame street on drugs (not in a good way).

I'm with you on Brazil, I find it a rather overrated film. The early word on Tideland has been pretty bad allround. Shame, after the bland Brothers Grimm this appears to be the second dissappointment from Terry Gilliam in a row.

Havent seen Brothers Grimm yet but have read mixed reviews. Would like to see it though.

Unfortunately Karel Zeman's films are almost impossible to get hold off. To my knowledge the only place where they have been released on DVD is in Japan, but it's as a very expensive box set and there are no English sub-titles.

The Zeman Munchausen was on TV in Britain in the 80's, 'cos that's when I saw it. Probably Channel 4...

I taped it at the time. Unfortunately the VHS tape has deteriorated so badly by now, it's completely unwatchable. :(

It was part of a really good animation season. That was when Channel 4 would occasionally put on something that didn't pander to the lowest common denominator.

Reading this thread, I had to go see what's on the Brazil DVD - the extras look a bit crap, though... :(

I love Terry Gilliams playfulness

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for trying to score points by being glib and thanks especially for misrepresenting what I said by cutting off half of the quote, but why not check this out:

Having grown up in Germany I sort of know what films were being made under Hitler because most of them still play on the telly there and many of them were rather innocuous comedies, not much different from what was being made in any other country at the time. With a few exceptions the propaganda wasn't in the main features, it was in the news reels that went with them. Curious fact: the biggest star of the Teutonic romantic comedy, the Meg Ryan of the Third Reich was a London born actress called Lillian Harvey.

Got to be Brazil.

Saw it recently again after seeing it years ago - hasn't dated really. The production design is magnificent, with not a whiff of CGI in sight.

& the theme of hyped terror alerts is now eerilly contemporary...
