What's the best Pogues Song?

Yep, good chunk of the songs on Red Roses were covers, Shane just finding his feet on stuff like Dark streets of london (which you correctly say is a fantastic song) and streams of whiskey.

Did anyone Shane's biography, the one written by his wife? Hard to believe he's still alive, but how amazing that he still is!

You get the impression from the book that she's the one keeping him alive, looking after him... He started drinking/smoking when he was still a child!

She left him yonks ago - for van morrison of all people :D - hence the line:

"Victoria, left me in an opium euphoria
With a fat monk singing Gloria

I didn't know she left him. Oh well...

Oh god, I couldn't possibly choose

Everything off the first 3 albums

But - possibly Rainy Night in Soho...or Sea Shanty may be the...no, can't do it, can't just choose one

She's been back with him for a while now. It's all she ever writes about in her Sindo column.

Streams Of Whiskey
Sally MacLennane
Pair Of Brown Eyes
Rainy Night In Soho
If I Should Fall From The Grace Of God

I think POBE is one of my all time favourite ever songs, brings a tear to my eye if I listen to it pissed.

Ooooh - its a toss up between Pair of Brown Eyes and Body of an American...........................I think.

Well, it is today, but I reserve the right to change my mind tomorrow:p .

Dirty old Town.

It was an anthem when I went to my local teenage disco so will always have the memories for me.

Streets Of Sorrow/Birmingham Six
Rainy Night in London
Boys From the County Hell

and, if i'm honest, Fairytale of New York:

It was Christmas eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, wont see another one
And then he sang a song
The rare old mountain dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Wonderful.

Rainy Night in Soho.

(Pogues thread making me all nostalgic and "jumpers for goalpostsish" for my misspent youth in Stoke Newington).

A Pair of Brown Eyes (on YouTube there's a clip of Shane singing it in a duet with Christy Moore)

Boys From the County Hell

The Body of an American

Birmingham Six

But for my money, Shane's best two songs are with the Popes: The Snake with Eyes of Garnet and The Song With No Name. Also an honourable mention for The Dunes, a song about the famine he wrote for Ronnie Drew.

Seen the Pogues live more than any other band now.

Rainy Night in Soho is my personal favourite but I pretty much like all their stuff.

Boys from the County Hell
If I Should Fall from Grace with God

Execellent call on the Popes songs -i 'd have loved to hear what the pogues did with them. Did we use to step out together?

Don't think so BA, I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of stepping out with another MacGowan fan. I appreciate the robust defence of the IWCA you're giving over at the politics forum, by the way. I wrote the article which kicked that thread off, but I'm somewhat busy at the moment so don't have the time or energy to get stuck in.
