What's the best phone/pda, then?

but I suppose its each to his own, if you don't give a shit about any of that, then fair enough, but don't be an itard and start slating other devices just because its not an iphone.

Jeepers, what a hypocrite. I don't think I've really made unwarranted criticisms of any of the competitor products, nor anything particularly damning that you wouldn't read elsewhere. You, on the other hand, have been quick to jump in with the silly 'itard' and 'fashion accessory' sneers.

I went and had another play with the handsets... the Xperia just isn't a contender. The Touch Pro is by far the nicest I've seen. The G1 is nice, but.. dunno, still feels like a prototype.

In the end, due to costs, I'll probably go for the G1 but I want a Touch Pro more.

I've had a play and I'm very impressed. I even managed to get it to play divx via its tv output! I think I'd choose one the touch pro over the g1 just because of tomtom!

I've got a diamond and I really wish I waited for the pro!

why am I a hypocrite? and why are you standing up for apples poor os functionality? maybe the itard was a bit over the top but I'm getting fucking pissed of with people who think everything that's not made by apple is shit

Problem is, it's £49.99 on a £45 contract, or £99.99 on a £35 contract. Ouch!
bloody hell, is that a new contract?

Forgive me, so you were defending your right to label users of one device as uneducated 'itards' at face value, staging a principled stand by opting for a corporate friendly WM device. Entirely consistent, I'm sure.

I don't own an iphone btw, more a Sony C902 cameraphone for its compact nature. I have owned various Psions, Palms and even a Blackberry over the years mind. I simply don't believe that the features you've outlined - MMS, video footage or a surmountable ringtone issue - are that vital. Cut and paste is the most frustrating in prospect, but I've rarely used over the years tbh.

For me, and this is where the personal comes in, I'd be willing to trade excellent browser and media playing functionality for some of the missing issues. None of the prospects are complete or equal in usability in every area- it's a matter of choosing the option which suits you most.

popped into the vodafone shop to see what their best offer was. Handset free, 600 mins and 250 texts a month with unlimited browsing for £35 a month. 2 year contract, mind.

You know what? After all this drama I think I am going to do the sensible thing and wait. The N95 is a perfectly capable handset that caters for my needs. I'm going to wait for the Touch Pro to get cheaper I think, it is a lovely handset.

That or a 3rd gen iphone, or a better android handset.

Where do you go to do that? I was thinking of popping into pc world.. but their range is shite.

That's a cop out! Mine was nicked.. so I need one a bit sooner.. otherwise I'd be tempted to wait too.

The screen on the Touch Pro is 480x640! That's proper VGA! The G1 is only 480x320.

It only really makes a difference if you're either a specs junkie or trying to play emulated Win95 games though :)

Oh I dunno. My only gripe with my ipaq was the 240x240 screen.. it's just not up to the job of multifunction browsing.

Oooh... just popped onto HTC's site and saw a new contender - the htc max4g... looks like it has nearly everything...

Interestingly the Touch HD is available for £0 on Orange at £35 a month on an 18 month contract. Tempted, very tempted... but can I live without a hardware keyboard?

I'm coming to the conclusion that it's possible.... do you know if it has vibe feedback?

I don't think any of the HTC WM6 devices have vibe feedback out of the box, I've not looked into putting it on aftermarket though.

I guess that it can be included as part of a downloadadble SIP. I had one on my ipaq that showed you what letter you were tapping in a box so you made fewer mistakes.. how difficult can force feedback be?

if you mean does it vibrate when you click, yes.

The reviews suggest it's still not as slick as the iPhone, but I can live with that for the millions of extra features. The touch flow system works really nicely, having seen it in the shops.

Kiz, I tried them all out in Carphone Warehouse. Apart from the Touch Pro which was in the vodafone shop.

It's between the Touch Pro and Touch HD for me now. Big screen vs hardware keyboard. Hmmm. Also, the HD is cheaper with a shorter contract.

Decision made... Touch HD for me. £40 a month with 600 mins, 3000 texts and unlimited browsing. Free handset.

The youtube video of the HD vs Pro sold it to me. The screen is massive and it looks really nippy.

Fuck me. Will o' the Wisp or what?! Who's yer deal with?

Will o' the wisp? I know the character but dunno what it implies. You mean I change my mind more than I change my pants? Yeah, it's a character flaw most often betrayed by my love of all things gadget. Pathetically, I enjoy this bit more than I enjoy the gadget itself. I also love it when things break but I can fix it.

Nothing better than a PC rebuild.

It's on Orange, Dolphin 35. I don't like Orange, but I suppose they're still better than o2 and t-mobile when it comes to coverage.

Touch HD for me! Wow! Just tried it out in an orange shop... I found the texting easier than on the iPhone (no errors when typing fast, one handed and two handed) and the TouchFlo3D stuff is very nice.

Browser is lovely, as you might expect.

Woohoo!

(Although Three are now claiming it's £210 to end my contract 8 months early.. very aggressive cancellation bloke... figured I might as well just let the contract run it's course, won't cost me any more)

The feature set looks a treat but isn't it a bit on the colossal side?

HTC do a good job of papering over WM though and the reviews are frothing:
http://www.mobiletechaddicts.com/2008/11/09/htc-touch-hd-review-2/

Its screen is 2.5x bigger than the iPhone's!

That's the point of WM, though, innit? It's easy to paper over. What I particularly like is that if there is a function that I suddenly decide I need.. it only takes a few clicks to find a solution that is quite well established and thus stable.

I like that. I appreciate that android will be there... but it isn't yet, is it?
