Whats the Best OS?

Whats the best OS?

I was always a windows man by default.

Briefly flirted with OS2 a while back - Warp! - but not for long.

I am now writing this post on my lovely new Macbook Pro, whilst my Mac Mini sits and smiles at me from the corner.

On the whole, I definitely prefer OSX for the everyday stuff at home. I use XP at work "meh" and I have Vista running under bootcamp for playing games on - also "meh".

OSX for me.

where's OS2, open and free bsd?

Or NT4 for that matter.

NT4 was fucking rotten.

Admittedly it has got worse in hindsight, but administrating an NT4 network really used to piss me off - 2000 was a fucking blessing in almost every way.

Poll to follow.

Poll is fundementally flawed. It asks "Best OS...?" and includes various types of Windows OS. Bit like asking "Best place to live in the World...?" and listing lots of places in the Midlands.

And "Best OS...?" for what...?

Linux is probably the best mainstream general-purpose OS at the moment, but the desktop applications aren't up to much.

Tend to run Office 2003 on Ubuntu at work...

But better than 98, 98Se or ME. Anyway I only added it as I noticed it was missing, it was a milestone OS and didn't want to be accused of being a fanboy of the more secure operating systems.

I like OS X, but I can't afford a computer with it on, so I use Ubuntu. When I have to use Windows, I find it a bit clunky. But it's horses for courses, really.

Aye, "best OS" is such a specious argument that I'm suprised this thread hasn't descended into more of a fanboy flame-fest :D

Best OS is the one that does what you need it to do with a bare minimum of short and long term hassle. The rest is mostly all just meaningless semantics - I've met die-hard windows users who don't like Vista because it doesn't have a start button.

For me, I like Linux but don't have a favourite - different distros are good for different things. Debian rocks for servers, various versions of Ubuntu and Gentoo for desktops, but that doesn't mean $DISTRO is shit. Similarly, I prefer windows 2000 to XP because it doesn't get in my way as much but at the end of the day windows is all about the applications anyway.

tbh of all the avrious O/S I have wprked with OS/400 is probably my favorite.

mainly cos the commands kinda made sense

wrkactjob - work with active jobs
pwrdownsys * immed - go fetch P45

XP is most people's happy (ish) medium.
XP is worthless, I have a lot of errors on startup and shutdown plus applications hanging and crashing. its junk

i say we regress to WinNT 3.5/4.0

There is no OS that is 'best' they all have there uses and their weaknesses. I cant be assed to go into it all but it really depends on what your doing........

Oh well, if you've had a few problems then statistically that's surely sufficient to declare the entire OS as complete junk.

Sorry for the crap poll, I was in a funny mood. Also missed out a few OS's. Oh well it was entertaining.
