What's stopped you going as far with your 'look' as you might like?

PICS!!!!!!!!!! That must have been MASSIVE!!!!!!

It was big, but not as big as you might think. I think my hair has some sort of growth limit.

I started when I was 14, and almost got my streak wrecked. A couple of years later, my grandfather died, and there was all this family pressure to cut my hair for the funeral. I thought about it, but wtf? he's dead. He won't care anymore.:)

So I left it long, and it was downhill with the family from there.:)

I have a beard. I have had it for many years since my electric razor blew up while I was travelling in France. I had set it to the wrong voltage for the particular region. It took about a week of not shaving for a beard to appear. When I got back to England I liked the look of it and decided not to bother getting a razor.

What I like about having a full face beard is that it is extremely unfashionable, and that is a statement in itself. What I would like is to have a Darwin type beard, thus:-

However if I leave it a few weeks without trimming I lose my resolve when looking at the mess in the mirror and tidy it up. So the answer is I haven't got the bottle to leave it to grow and get the Darwin look.

right now age, size and lack of occasion. if i were out a lot or could get to lots of festivals in the summer i'd have more reason to dress up, but with a kid and a still newish baby it's not going to happen this year. size is cos i get huge when i'm pregnant and it takes a good couple of years to get back to normal so i tend to have minimum stop-gap clothes to tide me over till i reach something more long-term maintainable. the age thing only hit me recently, my skin has changed noticably since i had the baby and my face is starting to age. strong hair dyes (which i've used for last 15 yrs) are starting to look harsh, and for the first time i find i'm starting to consider what'

lol baby posted before i finished.

... what's flattering as opposed to what i like.

I’ve had on and off yearnings for a tat, but I feel it would be too much of an affectation now – I only really wanted one for showing off when going out, which seems like a rather superficial reason.

I was thinking of a lower back one, although I know that’s the ‘tramp stamp’ now – that said, if done, I was planning to have a fair sized one. The other issue for me is that they don’t stay good forever and eventually all go a bit green and splodgy (although having a largish one was one way of keeping it looking decent for longer). I could accept the idea of living with a design forever – you just have to accept that upfront, and I suppose the other attraction of a back tatt was not seeing it every day!

interesting thread..there is NOTHING stopping me from going farther with my look, im long term unemployed in fact!
ive had some packets of blue/purple hair dye sitting in my bathroom for years.i got some packets for 50p ages ago and ive never used it:eek: despite the fact that part of my hair is bleached/highlighted very light so would take the dye..i think(anyone know)that this sort of dye washes and fades after a few days anyway...i really should try it i think:D

ive always looked retro/indie but not especially "extreme" so personal taste has stopped me from getting tatoos/piercing...they just dont appeal to me

i think dressing up can be a BIG mood elevator..ive got lots of wierdly coloured make up/nail varnish which i used to wear often..need to dust it off

people get into a rut with clothes( i certainly have)
trying something in a totally different style to the one you normally dress in can make you feel like a new person, same with wigs..freaky!

i wish dressing OTT wasnt just seen as for teenagers, people censor themselves far too much..i know one woman in her early 60s(granted a minor celeb)who wears (as daywear:eek:) westwood tartan bum skimmer mini skirts and giant platforms! good for her!

My weight and height. There are loads of things I'd like to wear that either aren't available above a size 16 and/or look terrible if you're under 5ft. I can't really wear skirts because none come in the right length, no tight tops, no big patterns, no horizontal stripes, no big boots. I feel very restricted as to what I can wear :(

Sloth, grubbiness and gut. I'd like to look fogeyish, but seconds after I put on some cords and a sports jacket the trousers are ripped and frayed at the ends, the jacket is missing buttons and my shirt is covered in jam.

I don't think I always have the attitude to carry it off - I'd get self conscious, and so was always an amusingly half arsed hippie/indie kid etc.

I always got about 80% of the way there and then fell at the final hurdle, scuffing my shins on the gravel of lameness. I suspect I looked borderline "tit" tbh.

I live in a very provincial part of the world where I'd probably be stoned to death if I actually wore some of the shit I'd like to wear. And of course if you only go halfway towards outrageous you just look like some wanker student, so I usually end up in jeans and t-shirt :(

I think I would be more outgoing with my appearnce if I wasnt unhappy with my body, if that makes sense.

This.

I'm a weird shape. If I was as buxomly lovely as felix (*rubs thighs*) I'd have a much better view of my body and be more adventurous. As it is, no boobs but shelf-butt and hippo-hips does not a good sexy look make.

Oh, and fucked-up feet. At the moment the only shoes I can wear for any amount of time are my walking trainers. Not very sexy.

Just not being *that* arsed i think.

even when i was at uni and therefore unconstrained as to what i could wear, i was still kind of slack looking. i did rock the desert cammies look quite a lot, but mainly because the pockets were so practical and they didn't look that bad covered in club grime

i did the whole hair dyeing thing as a kid and got sent home from school for it several times, so really there wasn't a lot more to be done there except shaving my head and i have some skin tags hidden under my hair so i knew that wouldn't be a good look.

and these days i find there's more to life than trying to look like X or Y these days. i'm an adult, i don't need to belong to a tribe any more.
some of the most conventional people i know are the ones doing their best to look different.

It's always harder for blokes I feel. People don't generally give girls aggro, verbal or physical, for looking non-mainstream in any way, but in some places blokes will get beaten up as a 'poof' for wearing anything other than sportswear or jeans.

yeah! that is so depressing..an old flatmate of mine used to get soooo much gyp, like serious ANGER for him being "a poof" and of course he was straight(off van drivers etc)and he just looked a bit indie really:eek:
he felt intimidated like they could have easily gotten violent..!
this was in london in the lewisham/new cross area..i know i know
plenty of goldsmiths students..
im guessing those bald, fat blokes were just jealous of him

excuse double post..

sometimes it can be REALLY healthy not to give a flying monkeys about yr look/image...
i know a few people who REALLY dress up(i mean ALL the time, nightclub wear as day wear..historical costume, men as well as women, some have been club promoters in fact, they are pretty bound up in standing out in fact..)
these folks are in their 40s-60s now:eek:
and i think they are too dependent on getting notice from others...
i used to think they were doing it for kicks but over 50% of it is about attention seeking..which isnt a good balance..

if you HAVE to do it to feel good about yrself they cant be right..

It can be OK to do if to get a reaction if it's because you just feel it makes the world a more interesting place. People who look different always cheer me up, whether I actually think they look 'good' or not.

Whatchoo talkin bout?

You are gorgeous.

BOTH.

But my opinion doesn't matter anyway, now that I am a shameless insincere sex pest.

Tattoos are very popular these days but I wonder if the people wearing them consider how they will look in a few years time. It is not the well-known problem of getting tired of them when you get older, or the fact that they lose their impact. It is that they, in common with clothes and hair styles go in fashions. Over the last few years it has been the Tribal pattern and back in the eighties many girls had a butterfly on their shoulder.

It is not the being out of fashion that matters but that it could be a give away as to how old a person is. This is more a problem for women than men. Having an old butterfly tattoo is a bit like wearing a car registration plate., or a building with 1868 embossed in the wall. That could stop many a lady wearing the halter top she sees in the shop.

If you have a tattoo you should go in for an timeless retro design like an anchor or a snake in plain blue.

This post is not to be taken too seriously by the way.

i have a tattoo, a ill-advised teenage rebellion tramp stamp that will become as awful and dated as those terrible celtic bands people used to have tattooed round their upper arms.

still, it doesn't bother me yet, and when it does i might just get a massive backpiece.

Nothing, I was never that into taking my look anywhere, although I do love it when other people do...

I've had mine for 21 years and I have to say, I do think it looks a bit crap. I don't mind the design but it's quite faded. I mostly keep it covered up now.
