What's open source software?

Now this took me a while to get me head about but check out this http://loss.access-space.net/ all the music created was done by open source then check out this http://creativecommons.org/ which is what all this is done under

so if i do not like something in gimp (open source photoshop) ill e mail someone who was involved with it,s writeing sugest and say what i do not like and why then it gets fixed then say i find out i could make something work better then ill e mail such as https://codecoop.org and no i can not get me head around open source that much but haveing so much fun in doing so and i aint given shit to bill gates thats my explanation no it aint easy and like bear makers it can be a little inclusive but if you are willing inspired then thats a start and wellcome..

It's much more than just helping an individual programme get better, though. If you're making a programme that deals with connecting to the internet in some fashion, rather than sit and work out how to open a connection, how to get your data to speak internet language, etc. etc. etc., you can just rip that part wholesale out of the programme of someone that's already thought of those problems, and then you can rip another bit out of another programme that deals with another problem you're facing, and so on and so on until you've mished and mashed all sorts of bits together into something that does pretty much what you want without you really having to understand what's going on

Err, at least that's what I used it for.
