What's for dinner?

ooh - I forgot the chocolate - I made Nigel Slater's Chocolate Espresso cake yesterday so I had a couple of pieces of that - it's one of those cakes that sinks slightly in the middle and cools to have a crispy outside and stays slighly gooey in the middle - it's very very chocolatey and very nice :)

It's great isn't it. I love Nigel Slater's recipes, they all seem to work for me. I've just bought 'the kitchen diaries' and it's fantastic. So many recipes I can't wait to try.

Poppadums with mango chutney
Chich pea dumplings in a creamy soup
Lamb Rogan Josh and rice
Okra roasted in aunties eesoteric homemade ghee
Roasted Potato and leek in chile / masala
Yoghurt and mint

and a few beers.

I promised the ex I'd made a nice dinner and that is it.

The veg in front of his DVD and watcg a couple of Little Britain I haven't seen before.

I've changed my mind and now I'm having cottage pie.

funnily enough Ive changed my mind too (well i ran out of time to make and eat stew) whos copying who?! :D im gonna have sausage and mash and gravy :)

Proper sausages from the butcher, with butternut squash with sage and shallots, and corn-on-the-cob.

Last nights leftovers - Spicy cajun chicken stuff & roasted root veg - irradiated in the microwave. Stlll hungry, so got some garlic bread in the oven, which should be ready in...9 minutes.

I've just made some carrot and spring onion fritters to go with fennel, lemon and roasted garlic risotto later :)

tonight- i am having nothing... will have a salad for iftar when my fellow workmates break their fast around half 5pm.

I'm going to have a well lardy cheese and bacon burger and potato wedges, and maybe corn on the cob.

Yum.

Sausages left over from yesterdays bangers and mash. (bloody lovely they are too, from the butchers).

with chunky home made oven chips with possibly baked beans

We were going to have stuffed marrow but can't get the right ingredients just now so it's back on the menu tomorrow. Any tips?! Veggie btw.

So instead i think i'll make my pasta sauce with Italian tomatoes from my dads green house.

Yesterday i had a really good mushroom pizza from Pizza on the Park on Hyde Park Corner.

Missus is away and other than yesterday when I made some lovely roast dinner I have been festing on easy meals.

Tonight it is tomato & mozarella filled chicken kievs with fries and peas on the side.

I was going to do the Nigel Slater recipe, cos there's a bottle of madeira knocking about somewhere:

Browned Onion and Madeira Gravy

I first intended this gravy to be poured over my toad in the hole but now make it for mashed potatoes, potato cakes, liver and braised vegetables (it is sensational with celery that has been braised in vegetable stock). It keeps for a couple of days in the fridge and is glorious poured over steaming hot, over bubble and squeak.

a very thick slice of butter
2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced
flour, no more than a level tablespoon
1/3 cup Madeira, Marsala or red wine
1¼ cups stock
Worcestershire sauce

Melt the butter in a heavy based pan, add the onions and cook over a low heat till golden and soft. Now continue cooking, covered with a lid, until the onions are truly brown and soft enough to crush between your fingers.

Stir in a level heaped tablespoon of flour and cook for a few minutes until it has lightly browned, then pour in the liquids. Season with salt and pepper and Worcestershire sauce and bring to a boil. Turn down the heat so that the gravy bubbles gently and leave for about fifteen minutes, stirring from time to time.

due to sheer bloody exhaustion, a tin of Heinz Lentil Soup - pepped up with some tabasco, worcestershire sauce and creme fraiche
