what's camberwell like?

Camberwell has two 'Castles'; the one on Church st is stuffed with pan-baked goat's crab and a sample of the many 30-somethings who've 'invested' in camberwell; the other castle is down towards walworth and is the sort of place that tramps would avoid even if they had the money.

Not even I would go in that latter Castle ...

t hasn't changed and it's a hole of frightening proportions ...

In close competition with the Silver Buckle for most terrible pub in the area** award.

Buckle just wins that, but only because the Castle is quieter.

**ie Greater London :p ;)

thinking about it, I have to confess to never having been in either :o. However, I think they make their respective characters abundantly obvious from the outside.

Anyone ever been in the Corrib Bar, which is in the vicinity of the latter Castle? It advertises almost Weatherspoonesque prices....

I was reffering to the stirling castle, now filled in with your pan-baked goat yuppies.

Good things about Camberwell: The Hermit's Cave; the Funky Munky; an excellent meze restaurant just inside Camberwell Grove (I don't remember the precise name); Basement Jaxx.

Occasionally good things about Camberwell: The Joiner's Arms; The Castle.

Formerly crap things about Camberwell that are now good things about Camberwell: The Red Star.

May be meeting some people on Saturday ;) in the (posh) Castle, C'well Church Street. Not my suggestion!!!

Never been there before, have no idea what to expect ... lets hope it's OK ...

Modern bar, a touch trendy; the bar itself seems to be constructed from marble. Not too confident about the range of ales - I think the frappucino brigade is more their target audience, so probably thin on the ground.

I prefer Camberwell to Brixton, because it is smaller, less hectic and you are less likely to get hassled on the street.

I'd second that. Brixton gets on my tits a bit, probably because of past things as much as present reality to be fair.

The Castle was far from bad as it happened, nice atmosphere, not crowded, not blatantly posh, and a couple of decent beers -- Adnams Broadside, and one from the Itchen Valley Brewery near Southampton which was pretty nice

The pub had a Cask Marque certificate, which only get awarded to pubs with very good cellar management.

I liked it :)

Camberwell

20 minutes by bus from the centre of town
Has Loughborough Juntion overland line
Ten minutes from Brixton
Lots of takeaways and places to eat
Camberwell Cabs, which is excellent and cheap
Lots of solicitors, doctors and media people moved in because of the prices
Japanese Supermarket
Snooker Hall
Suprisingly quiet in the daytime/weekends
A totally rocking market on Sundays halfway down Coldharbour Lane with the most friendly Pirate DVD seller you will ever meet - he even does trade-ins! (well when i lived there he did)

You dont need to make Camberwell the centre of your universe, but to live there is fine. Make it a base, and you can get pretty much anywhere easily.

I found that the neighbours were all pretty friendly as well when I lived there.

Like anywhere in London, it has its share of idiots (does the spare change man still hang around?), but its one of those places that most people think begins and ends will Camberwell Road. There are *loads* of lovely houses, places and views if you skirt around behind the hospital.

Try it out!
