the 68 is a great bus. you can escape from North of the river, f'instance.

Just been into Words Worths in Butterfly Walk - they'll be closing on Jan. 13/14 (can't remember which). 25% off all stock at the moment. They're not making enough money to continue apparently... Very sad - one of Camberwell's redeeming features..

I just was there too. This is terrible news. It's the best shop in Camberwell, and coming so soon after Index book closure in Brixton, it leaves us with no independent bookshops in the area.
This is a great loss to Camberwell. :( I'm really sad to see this, infact, as I live bang in between Camberwell and Brixton, this was the last reason for me to visit Camberwell. I shall not be shopping there anymore.

The 14th is a Saturday, so I'd guess their last day open is Saturday 14th.

Sad news indeed -- I posted it earlier in this thread but had no detail until now ...

that is really fucking sad. it's also a pisspoor reflection on the 4000+ students (amongst others) who live in the manor.

That's one thing I don't understand - looking at Camberwell you'd never guess there were so many students in the area, and well-paid doctors to boot... they're obviously keeping their cash for elsewhere...

Now the bookshop is closing the only other reason I'll have to venture into Camberwell in my lunchbreak is Basics - the wholefood shop...

What is there to spend your cash on in Camberwell? Two Sommerfields, an arcade, some dubious looking butcher/international phonecard seller (not Kennedy's) various fast food outlets, and some bookies.

what about the Hermits Cave?

Denmark Hill station is just up the hill a bit and it's only 10 minutes to Victoria.

Annorak fact time: Camberwell used to have a station on what is now the Thameslink line (there used to be a station in Walworth too)
How is that possible? Thameslink goes from Elephant to Loughboro' Junction and on to Herne Hill. How could it have gone through Camberwell?

Put Camberwell Station Road into Streetmap. It was on that road.

Walworth Station was near where Burgess Park is.

because camberwell is somewhere between the elephant and loughborough junction, perhaps?

The Maudsley?
As some who has spent time in the Maudsley as well as visited more than one friend there it is sad to see people suggesting that in-patients there make Camberwell dangerous. :(

I like Camberwell... it's like a more mellow version of Brixton I think.... if you have a bike it's dead central too!

where's this olive shop though?.. that sounds worth a visit!

Very close to the Hermits, in Camberwell Church Street :) -- I think a little way towards Peckham, on the same side of the road as the pub.

I don't think that's exactly what Maggot meant TeeJay, but the Maudsley IS one of the largest mental health institutions in Europe AND houses some seriously ill people...and with today's care in the community nonsense, I can see where he's coming from, which isn't the same to say that people who have spent time in a mental health hospital ARE dangerous...

Camberwell

Its a mixture of Glory and Shite, and small enough to get both in short walk.
Lived in or about Camberwell for years, Grove Lane, down by the bus garage, briefly on Camberwell grove, till we all got turfed out and the houses got tarted up for all those illiterate doctors, prior to testing the joys of Genteel Suburbia in Dulwich for a couple of years, from whence I finally fetched up in Brixton. Oh yes and prior to Camberwell I lived either side of the Walworth road the Elephant end, so I can fairly say its actually a not a place at all, its somewhere to pass thru on your way to somewhere else.
HOWEVER
That Bakery is Ace
The Greek offy at the top of Coldhabour lane does the cheapest Skol/Tennets super in the whole of London
The offy near the chinese supermarket stays open all night
The hermits is a laff
The Emergency Dental Hospital is there
The Magistrates Court is handily place
It has a swimming pool
Nice Tapas bar
Zara Kitchen - eat yerself to death
There are no obvious drug dealers
Plus, its a short hop over Dog Kennnel Hill to Sainsbuggers Superstore and the TWO book shops on Lordship Lane (East Dulwich) where all those fucking doctors hang out

I have probably spend more time in and around the Maudsley than most people on this thread and I have also spent a fair amount of time in Brixton and Camberwell...

I don't think that the area near the Maudsley is any more dangerous than other areas - for example Brixton which hasn't got a psychiatric hospital nearby. The Maudsley also has other more 'secure' wards located elsewhere (eg Landor Rd), in-patients are not likely to be let out to buy something from the shops or to go for a walk if they are being violent or behaving erratically. If they are being discharged or going further afield then they are likely to head straight for the nearest bus stop outside the main entrance or more likely be picked up by friends or family.

The main danger in camberwell doesn't come from in-patients from the Maudsley popping out to buy a package of cigarettes, or out-patients dropping by to see their psychiatirst - it is far more likely to be being hit by a vehicle, come from a run-of-the-mill non-psychiatric criminal or just someone who is pissed off generally.

I can see however that people who have never been on or visited a psychiatric ward or never had someone close to them experience mental illness to the extent that they need inpatient care might be extremely frightened about what lies inside and have vision of violent foaming-mouthed lunatics bursting to get of out of their straight-jackets to rush out and kill random people. In fact it is full of people pumped full of sedatives, chain-smoking, utterly bored with daytime TV and wishing they could go out for a walk (and to buy some more cigarettes), having just been told they will have to wait yet *another* week to speak to the consultant about when they can go home.

I don't know how it is now, but it wasn't always poncey, back in the days of the stirling castle (I'm that ancient)

Camberwell has two 'Castles'; the one on Church st is stuffed with pan-baked goat's crab and a sample of the many 30-somethings who've 'invested' in camberwell; the other castle is down towards walworth and is the sort of place that tramps would avoid even if they had the money.
