What's been your favourite recent discoveries?

My favourite recent discovery isn't a band but a genre:

Funky

or UK Funky

or UK Funky House - although that seems to drive the bottled-beer drinking, shiny shirted blokes who like the Hed Candi weak-arsed house music played in club-bars mad, cos it's not really funky house.

Its another variation on UK Garage, with (at it's best) soca beats, dancehall influences and more energy than dubstep's ever had.

OK, so the name's shit, that's not really open to debate. I like the music.

Well, not all of it. As with all types of dance music (or even all types of music) there's plenty of rubbish about, but it's the first new type of music that's made me prick up my ears for a few years.

Some tunes:

Roska - Climate change
Apple - De Sieliger
Crazy Cousinz - Inflation Instrumental
Attacca Pesante Ft Shea Soul - Make It Funky For Me
Sticky Ft Sim Simi - How Very Dare You
Hard House Banton - Sirens
Shystie - Pull it (Ill Blue remix)

:)

Joe Gideon and The Shark
Have heard a few of their songs that I liked so have ordered the album
I think they're good and that woman looks like she loves what she is doing

Some friends played a gig recently. On the same bill was Gideon Conn who was really rather brilliant. And Josephine Oniyama joined him for a couple of numbers, she's an incredible vocalist, bound to pop up on Later with Jools Holland at some point, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I think Josephine Oniyama is moonlighting as vocalist for Oi Va Voi at the moment. I can imagine Oi Va Voi being right up Jools Holland's street.

Bombay Bicycle Club.

I wrote them off at first as another Jo Whiley band when I heard someone on radio1 talking about them but for a bunch of teenagers they sound much more mature. Saw them last night and they were great. The album took a few plays before I got into it, but I expect it'll start popping up as often as The Horrors when I post in the Whats on the CD player? thread.

The singer sounds much like someone else but I can't think who:confused:

Anyone?
