What's been your favourite recent discoveries?

Spectre. Atmospheric early-90s West Coast instrumental hip hop, from the RZA-Premier school of thought.

do you know any of the other stuff on the Wordsound label? The album 'Return of Kill Dog E' by Scotty Hard is like the hip-hop equivalent of a dirty rucksack filled with gravel and blood.

I was rather impressed by Broken Records doing support for The National at the Royal Festival Hall last week.

I've yet to see whether the album I bought on the back of it lives up to their live performance. :hmm:

Free Energy (Philadelphia; DFA Records - rock)
Mariee Sioux (Nevada City, California: Grass Roots Recordings - folk)
Kurt Vile & The Violators (Philadelphia; Matador Records - psyche/rock)
AA Bondy (Birmingham, Alabama; Fat Possum Records - americana)
Frontier Ruckus (Lansing, Michigan; El Jefe records - indie folk)
The Strange Boys (Austin, Texas; Rough Trade - garage)

Best British band I've seen/heard of this year:
Male Bonding (London; Sub Pop Records - sub pop)

Eliane Radigue  (look it up on the internets if you're interested.) (which you're probably not.) (never mind.)

I find Eliane Radigue a bit boring. Olivia Block too. But then I'm not really into drone music much. Or rather, I like drone music to have a sense of the ridiculous, or the out of contraol, to it, as it does with a lot of Noise music.

If you like Eliane Radigue then you might like my friend Helena Gough though. Her music's ace.

Turing Machine
Friends of Dean Martinez
Johnny Halliday's 1969 album Rivière... Ouvre ton Lit - with the Small Faces and Humble Pie

Got some EPs by Jesca Hoop and Lanterns on the Lake which I am liking very much.
Hadn't come across Rachel Yamagata until late last year, enjoyed a few songs on that album but her new one released not long ago has a duet with Ray LaMontagne, I love both of their voices so I'm looking forward to hearing it.
