Otherwise, chamomile, vervain, hops, valerian, skullcap are all good sedative herbs- in descending order of innocuity/ ascending order of hardcority .
Pedant alert...
Herbs can't really be ranked like this.
Chamomile is a gentle nervine (will relax the nervous system) and also cut through spasm so can help to relax the gut - often a cause of restlessness at bedtime. Also, emtotionally soothing and supportive.
Vervain relaxes the thinking part of the mind as well as being a general nervine. It's good for those who have whirling thoughts, lists of things to do, and lots of responsibility.
Hops is a hypnotic herb - very useful for those who can sleep well but have difficulty dropping off. Avoid it if you're prone to dperession - for some people, it can bring on a bummer.
Valerian is the "herbal valium". It's especially useful for people who are highly strung. People who are more low-key and laid back may find themselves feeling monged out by it.
Scullcap is very relaxing in the head region, physically and mentally and emotionally. Use it if you're prone to stress headaches. It's very supportive for the nervous system generally.
Sorry for the off-road swerve - as you were...
