What will the effect of the new licensing laws be on Brixton?

That's interesting. Do you know why?
Things were pretty out of control for a while. It must have been the summer before last. There was a mini riot one night at 2am with about 50 people kicking the crap out of each other. I had to climb over a wall to escape. It was all started by some bloke hitting his girlfriend, apparently.

Put me off the place. If I wanted that kind of shit I'd go to Croydon.

There's actually been very little trouble at the Hob over the past 8 years or so I've drunk there. Even when the drugs thing was a bit out of control there was rarely any trouble in there. After Martyn and his wife retired down to Torquay things started getting a bit 'obvious'. The police had been pressuring the brewery for a while to do something. One new landlord tried to clean it up a bit but with little success - he was removed and the current landlord brought in. To be fair, the place looks a lot nicer now and is definitely "cleaned up" - he's done a reasonable job and retained most of the locals (many of whom had pissed off around autumn/winter last year - there were times when me and 2 mates were the only people in the boozer!)

On the subject of other bars etc in Brixton that have applied for licences, I guess there must be list somewhere of all the licence applications that have already been approved....I'll try to find it. (The list on the website are the ones that are still to be considered.)

the last three time i've been there the Hob was eerily empty. sad state of affairs.

only last night there were about 10 people in there and they'd run out of wine at 10 pm.

Good luck. The recently dumbed-down Lambeth website doesn't seem to allow any sort of document search these days. I was resorting to skimming through the minutes of each meeting of the licensing committee.

I get the impression that quite a few pubs haven't asked for an extension/variation from their current hours, and have just gone with "grandfather rights", that will allow them automatic extensions for New Year etc.

You're absolutely right - bloody impossible to find anything. I phoned Lambeth up instead but they cut me off. So I phoned up again and they put me through to the licensing department - which was an answerphone.

I'd guess pretty limited effect - Brixton's effectively had late licensing for years.

Afterall Brixton's already got a lot of late night places (I can think of getting on for 15 within a ten minute walk of the tube) to drink / dance at - and apart from at weekends most of them are rarely full during the week. This means that plenty of them are only really weekend place - for instance Tongue & Groove is not open apart from Thursday - Saturday.

And finding after 11 o'clock off licenses isn't exactly difficult either.

yeah I was discussing the issue with a mate yesterday n we pretty much agreed with everything you say.

The Evening Standard (on which I rely for all my information) had a list of London boroughs and the number of late licenses for which they have applied.

Lambeth = 0

:(

I thought that table in the Substandard listed the number of continuous 24-hour licenses, not merely late licenses

Well that is obviously not true.

The Standard story today has a list of London boroughs with places with late licenses. Lambeth's part of a group of about 10 councils that haven't managed to put a full list together yet.

I'm at a loss to know why they should be expected to. Surely councils aren't under an obligation to publish "A Guide to Late Drinking in..." at the council tax payers' expense

Plan B on Brixton Road will now be open til 5am on Fri/Sat and serving beer till close.

They've also announced some nights with lots of live bands all playing short sets (like another night I can think of!)

so the albert will be staying open late then - til 12.30am, so i hear. anyone else found anywhere else so far, or were you all in the albert last night?

I think the Albert can legally stay open even later if so inclined - it was rammed last night with a great atmosphere.

I reckon the new hours might make things a bit tougher for club promoters with people less inclined to leave a warm friendly pub - especially mid-week.

After all, if the Albert stays open till, say, 12 on a Tuesday, who's going to schlep down to the noisy (and usually empty) Dogstar for that last beer anymore?

or more worryingly it sounds like a soulless yuppie bar full of glass bar-tops and stainless steel and shit music. hopefully things aren't getting that bad yet though.

is the albert applying for later hours?
the albert has got.. 12.30 mon to thurs,,, 2.30 am friday and saturday and 12.30 sunday. Although i understand Pat isnt going to use them if there is no custom in the pub,

still to be 100% confirmed but the ritzy cafe is looking at

- occassional wednesdays (basically when Eric Soul's Afrogroov night is on) extended opening til midnight

- all thurs open til midnight

- all fri / sat open til 1am

- all sundays til midnight

as of next weekend.

this means post movie drinks at the weekend and later dj / live sets.

oh, and there is a license to take drinks into the screens now too...

That's going to be messy isnt' it? Not sure I think Plan B would be a great gig venue - most of the furniture and stuff can't be moved so the main dancefloor isn't that big...

That must have upset the whining noo-locals. Unless they fancied a drink, of course.

I was quite surprised when they didn't throw us out, but well chuffed. I did have a terrible hangover the next morning though.
