What was you 'work experience' like?

I went on a YTS when I was 18. I ended up doing work experience at Curry's Head Office in Ealing.

I hated it and left :D

Not allowed to do it. I really wanted to go to do it in Parliament with the local MP, but was told I was a disgrace to the school.

Now I work there, so there's a hidden irony somewhere.

what, you work in Parliament or your local school?

I did mine on the SS Great Britain aged 14. All the other kids were making tea at accountants offices while I was tarring ropes and swabbing the decks

We were asked what we wanted to be. I said Forensic Psychologist (this was when Cracker was on TV).

They said "that's something you do a Masters in, not work experience" and sent me to do it with the police.

On my first day the sergeant or whatever was not there as she was having an infestation of snakes removed from her house (this was in London).

It was ok. They couldn't put me in any danger so we had to make sure we only got to crimes after everything was over and everyone had gone home. The only thing I saw was a dread and some blood on the floor from a crack stabbing.

The police I was with were bored so wanted to pull someone over and search them. They nearly pulled over someone I knew who would've had weed on them.

Serge came back on my second day, noticed I had a pierced lip and kicked me off it. School made me write to the met to apologize and plead with them not to let my terrible example put them of taking other girls from my school.

I worked on an old ladies ward at the local hospital. Nearly killed one of them by giving her too much porridge and they had to get a machine to suck it back out of her throat. Cleaned up a lot of incontinence accidents, wiped bums and saw lots of people at death's door. Was not a particularly pleasant experience :(

I did three lots:

1. Worked in Spud-U-Like which was already my part time job so got paid for it but the 'experience' was limited
2. Worked in the Cambridge Military Hospital as a Commis Chef which was interesting to say the least
3. Worked in the Ritz Hotel in London which was salubrious to say the least

at 14 I did work experience with the photographer for the local paper. It was ace - I learnt how to develop my own photos :)

Our school never did anything like that (although I think they should have!). The only way to get a job in our town was to have an uncle on the council who could get you a job on the bins (or litter picking). Not having a relative in such an exalted position during Thatcher's reign - peddling hash and acid was considered a valued local service in our local community!

I did one lot at school, one lot at VIth form. At school (year 9, age 14) I went to my mum's work for a week (solicitors office). There were two girls from private schools (client's daughters I think) there too that week. They got lots of special attention from the partners and got to do cool stuff, I helped my mum file. :D

Was well jealous of the kids who worked in shops and then got Saturday jobs.

VIth form was better (age 17). Local paper. Got to review a film and write a couple of stories. :)

I did mine in a recording studio, could've been really good if I hadn't got hit by a car on the way home. :(
Ouch. :( Think I've seen you write that before, it was at the beginning of the week, wasn't it? How long were you out of action?

I went to the workshop where my uncle worked and got to weld and hang round with some sound blokes.

When I was a bit older I was on a youth employment scheme and got put in a office for 3 weeks. All I did was scan and shred. I got took aside and told I didn't look like I was making an effort...FFS!

Did another two weeks at TKMaxx getting deliveries off the trucks. It was dull but the people i worked with were alright.

Did a week pre GCSE and a week after, during A level years. Went to labs and did sciency stuff both times- one week was at food science labs, pretty interesting tbh (had to sign the official secret's act n all!) and the other week spent with various lab techs just setting stuff up and getting loadsa chemicals out of store rooms.

I did mine when I was 15 with Birmingham Focus, a charity for blind and visually impaired people. It was really good. They sent me on a blindness awareness course, and put me in different parts of the charity every day. I liked it so much that I volunteered with them one day every week that summer, in their day centre.
