What was the family car, then...?

Morris minor, Hillman minx, Austin something or other, Citroen 2CV, Triumph 1200.

we had one of these, which i loved, as it had a bench front seat, so I (as the eldest) could sit up front with mum and dad:cool:

dad got bored of cars easily, so changed them quite a lot, i remember a red mini van (4 kids in the back) a robin reliant (same) vauxhall viva, a morris minor, a ford cortina, a ford zephyr (i think), the last family car we had was a ford sierra

My father had a Beetle, then an MG Midget, but he buggered off in '67. We relied on my grandad and his big shiny Cortina till my mum remarried a few years later, and from then on it was BMWs (which were so smooth that I used to be incredibly car sick on days out :D). My mum didn't drive till the 80s, and had a succession of Golfs, which she passed onto me. :)

reachin into my memory to around age 8 in 1980....

*not the actual cars ^, but pretty close tbf ;-o...close enough to make me smile remembering when they had those :-)

I thought I'd make my 17,000th post an anoraky transport thread. :D

So, when you were young, what was the family car? Was it any good?

My dad was - and is - a Volvo driver. After someone in a Robin Reliant caused £700's worth of damage to the family Ford Escort in a 15mph collision, he decided he wanted something sturdier to transport his young family around in. The result was that for most of the '80s we pottered around in one of these:

A Volvo 343 - or two of them, actually, a W-reg one and then a new one in 1987. Which was then replaced with a G-registered 240 estate, identical to this:

I blame my dad for my love of old Volvos, 'cos he really liked them, and the 240 was one of the first cars I ever drove.

So, what did your parents have? Anything interesting?

Volvo 240 estates. First a yellow one, then a red one identical to the above. Think it might even have been F-reg

A couple of these when I was little (broke down all the time!)

Upgraded to various Austin Maxis:

Typical teachers cars!:)

Our first family car for the 6 of us, believe it or not, was the mighty Seat 850:

I was a tot then but still long journeys were uncomfortable for my older siblings at the back :D

Thankfully we soon graduated to the Simca 1200 in all its 5-door glory:

Ford Escort, Renault 19, Austin Princess, Austin Ambassador, and then a Rover SD. A Monetego (MG!) came later.

When we became a two car family my mum got a mini.

First car my Dad bought in 1972 was a Citroen GS. He won some money on the horses so decided to learn to drive and buy a car. It was going to be a Vauxhall Viva originally but they couldn't deliver it on time.

After that a GS Estate then 2 CXs before he died.

We had at various times:

A bright orange Hillman Imp which had to be parked at the top of a hill because the starter was borked.

A blue Maxi - loved that car.

A purple Viva with leopardskin seat covers.

A white beetle.

A horrible Blue Avenger ( I think) that my grandfather welded the passenger door on to stop it fallin off, so my mum had to get in the car through the passenger door. This was not good when the cops stopped her once and asked her to step out of the car. :D

And one of those Volvo's in the OP - same colour and everything. We called it the hearse. :)

My mums boss used to drop me to school a lot too. He had an E-type Jag and an XJS, and his wife had a TR7 and a Mazda, so I was the envy of the school some days. :)

The main ones I remember were the Nissan Sunny and the Nissan Bluebird.

My mum had a couple of company cars at the time too: a VW Golf and a VW Polo (not at same time). It was around the time those terribly bad people were stealing the VW badges, so she took hers off herself and put it in a drawer in the kitchen so the bad boys wouldn't get the satisfaction of stealing it themselves.

lol. :D

I remember our second hand CX was the comfiest car I have ever sat in. And as a nipper I could sleep streched out on the back seat. The GS was lovely too...a tad slow but wicked.

My dad used to refer to his as 'the removal van' or, alternatively, 'a tank without guns.'

Hmm, Vauxhall Vivas. My mum bought one of those when she went back to work in the mid-'80s. It was a perambulating pile of scrap that made a habit of breaking down in the worst locations it could find. It left her stranded on a busy roundabout in Leicester once at the height of the rush hour, after the throttle cable snapped. Even so, it's a shame she got rid since Vivas are becoming sought-after now. After that, the family's second car was a string of Ford Fiestas and a Peugeot 106.

Vivas are sought after? Are people mad? They were SHIT then, so I can't imagine trying to run one now!

Getting quite rare now, though, along with a lot of other '70s and early '80s cars. They're not fetching silly money - you can buy them for a few hundred pounds - but they're not really depreciating any more either. Worth hanging onto, if you've got one. Same goes for a lot of old cars.

ours was a lovely triumph dolomite

my dad wanted the triumph acclaim (I think) but took so long in deciding they went out of production :D

parents had her since my brother was small and we finally scrapped her about 15 years later :D (ours was a dark red)

We had all sorts of cars, my father was a car nut. We had Mini's, Escorts, even a Renault 4 for a while. We were a bit flash and where the only people on the street with two cars for many years. My father had a car for work and a family car.

My first car was a Vauxhall Victor, then I bought two Viva's and tried to put a V12 Jaguar engine into one, but I ran out of money. I then had everything from a Bentley T2, Alfa's, Jaguar XJS V12, Pontiac Firebird, Mini's, VW Golf Cabriolet, Lamborghinin Espada, Lotus Europa, all usually classic one way or another. For the first time since I was 17 I don't have a car at all.

First of all it was this

greenr4_web.jpg

then it was 'upgraded' to this

SF2004Bob.jpg

Which we lost to rust, it had holes in the floor and the back seat was always soacking wet.....then I had to put up with this for a bit!

Then this which I remember being MASSIVE inside! :D

Yeah, the CX was comfy alright.

It was a 1989 22TRS which was immaculate, and ended up being sold to a real Citroen nut who had an SM too.
