"If you'd stayed with us, you could be bottom of the league now. Ner, see what you're missing out on"

?

Probably another rendition of their charming

"Sol, Sol, wherever you may be
You're on the verge of lunacy
We don't give a fuck if you're hanging from a tree
You Judas cunt with HIV"

Enlightened lot as they are...

Campbell, who was our captain, youth product, one shining light in a dire team, with us for a decade, best cb in europe, strung us along for a year saying he was staying to the extent that we refused a then british record 20m from Utd then he left us for free but stated that he could never play for arsenal then went to arsenal, our biggest rivals.

I don't agree with what was sung but has to expect some well deserved grief

i have heard a lot worse than that sung, he is lucky he wasn't playing in the seventies if he is that sensitive

I have sympathy with Spuds fans who loathe him for what he did, which was a gross betrayal by any stretch of the imagination, but there are limits beyond which you should not go in singing and chanting at matches.

That's disgusting.

This. Also, gets my goat when the undeniably unpleasant song is called racist ("hanging from a tree" = lynching = rascist!), which it simply isn't.

from memory of watching the game (on TV),I remember them singing "you can stick Sol Campbell up your arse"

but that's hardly offensive.

according to my man on the scene, it was most likely:

"you are my lennons
my aaron lennon
you make me happy
when skies are grey
you're better value
than theo walcott
and by the way
sol campbell is gay*"

*or "has AIDs"

To be fair to Spurs fans I don't think the chant had any racist connotations at all. It was first sung when Campbell went AWOL for a week or so and the talk was that he'd had a major mental breakdown and could be suicidal.

So the reference about hanging from a tree was referring to him having possibly done a Mark Speight and killed himself somewhere. It was not a racist remark. Though still pretty nauseating and out of order, as well as the references to him being HIV+ (cos he's a poofter innit- bloke down the pub told me, guv).

hmm, liking this defence.....

oh it's not racist cos it wasn't about lynching a black guy as such, it was more that we were hoping he'd topped himself.... never mind either that in situations such as these, the instance of prejudice is usually judged from the perspective of the person sinned against, so if Campbell has reported it as racist abuse, then racist abuse it is.

i suppose all those clubs hissing when they used to play spuds weren't racist either but simply cos of the rumour that Bill Nick's tyres were let down outside Higbury on derby day?

Sorry. So why would he be "swinging from a tree"?

You'd have to be some kind of fucking idiot not to work out the potential racial connotations to that if you're shouting it at a black man.

Pompey have said they're not making an official complaint, which means the F.A can't do anything.

Harry's commented, but it was The Bill that urged the F.A to act on the chants as they realised they couldn't nick the majority of the away support all at once.

So the F.A can't take action against other clubs unless a club complains. Toothless bureaucracy or what eh?

If it was a League One or Two club they'd get fucked by the F.A.

Hold on, we've just released a statement saying we will back Sol if he wants to take it further. Very professional Frogmore Road.

Jesus. That makes "Rather be a paki than a jew" look positively enlightened.

Londoncalling, they name is hipocrisy...

Tottenham High Road is not Alabama, and lynchings aren't part of the discourse.

You're either expecting an undue degree of cultural sensitivity from the Park Lane or you're accusing them of being deliberately racist. Which latter isn't in keeping with what I've seen of the Spurs crowd over 15 years of going to WHL.

Think we've had this discussion before though.

only guessing, but maybe because tree was all they could find to rhyme with hiv? i think if they meant it in a racist context then they would have been a lot more explicit

I've not heard very much at all in the way of racist comments/chanting with Spurs over the years. Granted I have heard a few individual comments but with the level of meat heads who follow football that's (unfortunately) to be expected.

I can honestly say that Spurs fans are not racist on the whole but in this case some have gone over the top with Campbell's abuse. He does deserve some shit though, not about his colour or sexuality but about him being a hypocritical, lying shit bag.

For what its worth I have no respect for him at all (not that he'd give a shit)

or as someone suggested earlier it could reference judas who was hung from a tree , which in a non-partisan way makes more sense than the suggestion that it is racist . The question is do spurs fans know that judas was hung and if so are they clever enough to make the connection and put it in a song ?

IMO it's either the Judas reference or the fact that when this chant was first heard Campbell had gone missing and there were fears he had killed himself somewhere.

It could be that whoever came up with the song chose that line because of its dual purpose due to its racist connotactions. Though I think that's probably giving its creator too much credit...

Anyways, the chant is nasty enough as it is even if there is no racist intent. Though for the record I never made the statement this is what was actually sung at Campbell last week.

tbh it just highlights to me the way in which a lot of fans, particularly at bigger clubs, have got no sense of proportion whatsoever about the game.

I can remember Rovers favourites joining c*ty. They got booed a bit but there was nothing like the offensive levels of abuse Sol Campbell and others have been subjected to. He joined a more successful club because he wanted to win stuff after giving several years of good service to the Tottenham cause. Get over yourselves, you're only upset because your neighbours win stuff and you don't.
