Isn't that in the debut month, and not commerical sales at that...? How would you measure the number of people who've installed Xp over the pre-installed copy of Vista you get with a new PC...?
If you're going to try and spin the sales into being poor you'll have to do better than that.

Microsoft Revenue Surges on Strong Sales of Vista, Office
October 25, 2007

Revenue growth in the first quarter was the fastest since 1999.

Microsoft reported a 27 percent surge in revenue to $13.76 billion for the first quarter of 2007, which ended September 30, 2007, making it the fastest growth in revenue for any first quarter in seven years, and up almost $3 billion from the same quarter a year ago.

The software maker, headquartered in Redmond, Wash., said the results were buoyed by combined revenue growth of more than 20 percent across its client, business, and server and tools businesses.

This reflected "robust demand for Windows Vista, the 2007 Microsoft Office system, Windows Server, and SQL Server," Chris Liddell, Microsoft's chief financial officer, said in a statement released Oct. 25 after the close of the financial markets in New York.

Operating income for the quarter came in at $5.92 billion compared with $4.47 billion a year ago, with net income of $4.29 billion (as opposed to $3.48 billion last year) and diluted earnings of $0.45 a share for the quarter, from $0.35 a year earlier.

But isn't half the point that most consumers are very wary of Vista...?

This really isn't the case if you have the power to run it. Anything less than 2GB ram and it's worse than XP. 2GB and upwards and it's better. More stable, looks nicer, runs faster, a few nice little improvements here and there.

I had all of that - brand new Vaio laptop (work not private) and it was shite...might have been Sony software buggering it  I did have a very early version tho (Was working for an MS agency).

I found the Office 2007 upgrade better because of stuff like the Ribbon UI that seemed like a step forward in useability and functionality. Excel is transformed - Pivot Tables esp.

Vista sure does look pretty but its still not a compelling argument for an upgrade IMO. Same with all the desktop gubbins. The only thing I really missed was the media stuff - photo browsing mainly.

There were a lot of problems with drivers when it was first released. This was the main problem. A year after launch and most stuff is fine.

Garf: I don't know about the ins and outs, but I do know it runs like shit off a shovel on my laptop with 2GB ram.

I wouldn't say home user's are.

Businesses on the other hand. But it took until SP2 for alot of business to finally accept XP.
