what to do with fennel?

Meera Sodha's recipe for broccoli, fennel, and chickpea stew with a green chilli, garlic and, interestingly, orzo pasta is a bit fiddly, but lush.
Made this last night, and it was pretty good. Not really fiddly either, just lots of chopping.
 
I like adding the fronds to coleslaw for a change. As others on the thread have said, it makes a good celery substitute for soffrito/mirepoix.
