What the heck can I put in the kids lunchboxes?

I have run out of ideas for the kids lunchboxes, they are bored with everything I give them and leave half of it. Help!

I've done stuff-on-sticks, cheese and crackers, various sarnies etc etc but now its all old hat :( To make it more complicated my son has Aspergers and gets very twitchy about having anything in his lunchbox that the other kids might think is weird, despite him being a really adventurous eater at home.

Gods, what a subject to come back to the boards on, hehe. All suggestions gratefully received, even if its just better sarnie ideas. Ooh, and I forgot to mention the c word- cheap,it must be cheap! And easy to do all blurryeyed first thing in the morning while burning the toast :D

Wraps are good!
I stick in some salad, strips of chicken that I've coated with herbs/spices and then griddled maybe some olives, some mayo...roll it all up and you're away.

Or cold pesto pasta with *stuff* in it....olives (again :D ), tomato, cucumber, prawns?

Or pitta pockets - tuna/sweetcorn/mayo.

Tomorrow my son is having some little meatballs that I'll cook tonight and a roll with some salad and mayo in (and then he can either stuff the meatballs in too, or eat it separately).

Or a drumstick done the night before and a pot of salady bits and some bread?

Or pitta bread slices and houmous/taramasalata?

Have you tried using a tortilla wrap instead of normal bread....mine only have packed lunch in summer and are fed up of it already. But will miracously eat anything inside a wrap...ham/cheese/salad today.

Oh and re the easy to do in the morning thing - for all of those I prepare and cook everything that needs to be cooked the night before while I'm doing dinner, then just leave it all in an obvious place at the front of the fridge, ready to wrap/roll/stuff/fill in the morning. :D

Oh god, that implies organisation and forethought, noooo!

Tbf - I only have to do lunches for my son on the odd day when he refuses to touch the school dinners, so a bit of organisation is not too much effort (and worth it - better than him returning with uneaten stuff  ), but if it was that bad, I'd just get him a sausage roll on the way to school. :p :D

My Dad used to have frequent trips to Finland and Sweden when I was kid. We used to get reindeer sandwiches. This is not very good advice. Sorry.

my kids only have packed lunches in the summer term too. i've drawn up a list of sandwhichs, wraps, salads etc and i sit down with them before i go shopping so they can choose their lunches for the next week. they choose from:

sandwich/rolls
cheese and marmite
chicken salad
tuna sweetcorn
cheese salad
blt
ham salad
corned beef

in pots to eat cold
pasta salad
tortilla
meatballs in tomato sauce
chicken and chorizo stew
roast veg with feta
salad

then either a muffin, bag of dried fruit, piece of fruit ,yogurt or a smoothie, with a bottle of water, squash or fruit juice

their school has quite a strict lunchbox policy, no nuts, no crisps or sweets, no fizzy drinks etc

I think I'll get the kids to have a read of this thread and see what they fancy. What's the betting it'll be reindeer sandwiches lol.

Little gits refuse to have school dinners, even though we were eligible for free ones up until last year. I'm just so fed up with lunches in boxes. Especially the damn boxes which keep breaking  What happened to their early days in school when I would lovingly make them beautiful lunches every evening and have to stop myself adding soppy little notes? *sigh*

Get them saome Wasabi Peas. Just discovered these, and like the site says, they're highly addictive.

Wasabi Peas

Mrs.Griff got them from M&S, and they're lush.

Certificate of adoption :D

With JUST KIDDIIIIING! on the back :)

Then 'or are we' in tiny letters at the bottom :hmm:

Quesadillas (sp?)

Put wrap in dry hot frying pan, heat for a bit with a tiny amount of oil. Turn over and put cheese and ham on half. Fold it in half and heat for a bit long melting the cheese/ham. Take out, cool off and cut into segments/slices. Done.

Chili/curry in a wide-necked flask so they get a hot meal early in the day, freeing up the evening for colouring/xbox/murdering insects

:)

If this makes you feel better: at the moment I'm being driven mad by my kids only EVER wanting plain cheese or plain ham on white bread. It drives me mad, it's so fucking boring and I want them to be adventurous and eat a wider range of sandwich fillings :D

are you sure they are leaving half of it coz they are bored with it, or are you packing too much into one box?

if they are bored, ask them what they'd like and see what's doable

A friend just turned me onto pitta bread 'sandwiches' after many complaints from me about boring lunch time food. I'm trying to not spend all my wages on eating out at lunch, so they're a really good idea and a bit more interesting than the usual.

My favourite filling is chicken breast, salad and a bit of sweet chilli dipping sauce. If they don't like the chilli, ketchup is always a good substitute. All you have to do is shove it in the pitta too, so not much prior thought required.

1 little Innocent smoothie (mango/orange/banana mix)
Bunch of grapes
Chopped mango
Chopped pineapple
3 mini bread sticks
1 cheese straw
Dried mango
Dried dates
Small white roll filled with choc spread or marmite
Geo Bar
Home made choc brownie

Seems to go down well with my daughters...

Thanks all, I'm feeling suitably inspired now. Off to evict spiders from the wee tupperware boxes and fill them full of good stuffs.

blimey - in my day we had to be content with dairylea on mighty white.... i had to plead with my mum to cut the sandwiches long-ways rather than width-ways like Naomi had.... :( i had a hard childhood... :D
