I have opened an internet cafe.
I am intending to employ my wife's brother who will leave his job to come and work here.
He will get twice what he earns at the moment and have a safe, clean job rather than humping wood about in a cloud of saw dust as he does at the moment.
He will work part time for the rest of this week and then go full time but get full time wages for the whole month.

His second day and he hasn't turned up for work with not so much as an SMS to say he won't come.

I think he's already told his boss he will leave so if I tell him to fuck off that's hin fucked but this is a business not some fucking charity event.
I'm not happy.

I have been following your Indonesian tale with interest and it seems more likley with each passing day that eventually you will be killed by the family and buried in a paddy.

Exactly. It might, for example, prove embarrassing if you sack a recently deceased person.

Glad the missis didin't see that. :D

I really am going to have to get used Indonesian habits.
Turns out he was working nights until 8am at the wood factory and went to bed as he was so knackered.
It's not habit here to refuse someone as it's seen to be rude. Not turning up is fine as long as you have reason.
Anyway he's back part time and starts full time next week.

Salary Rp 600,000/month + food and drink free while working.
He's on a bit over Rp300,000 now for 10/12 hours a night in crap conditions.

Also have you trained him properly, made sure he's confident he can cope? It might seem like an easy job to you but if it's not what he's used to he might find it terribly daunting.

He's a bright bloke. Sod all education but that doesn't make him stupid.

He'll pick it up in no time.
And, as a bonus, honest as they come so he'll get a set of keys soon.

So, he might be alright? After all?

Blimey

I hope I never get to the place you're in, derf, where your basic premise is that people are cunts/losers/taking the piss and work from there.

I think getting to know a new culture is a constant and neverending process...

Glad you both seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet now.

And I didn't mean he might be stupid, just that some situations can seem daunting when they are new to you. I used to hate serving coffees in meetings for various reasons, practically brought me out in hives. Not exactly a difficult job though.

You got that right. Living here is still an adventure even after all this time.

Serving coffee. Don't remind me. Everyone used to hate me serving coffee. I just can't make the stuff. I'm told me tea is about as undrinkable.

Friends & Family= Oil & Water

Work: Friends & Family!
Unless its a venture or idea initially established by either, like oil and water.
Make some excuses why you don't need him and find someone suited for the job.

As a sweetener say you'll give him the contract to put in interior funiture, hang a few doors decorating etc., if he's working in that field and find someone experienced in this field to do the job.

If he wanted a change in direction he would have grabbed it with both hands and/or at least contacted you.

Do Indonesian habits make a contract of employment a bit rude if the work's between family members? It can be difficult hiring family members in any country, but it sounds like Indonesia has a more trust-based system where people could see contracts between family members as implying lack of trust. It'd still be better to have a proper contract. Perhaps even be apologetic and explain that this is just what you're used to and you need to have it set out in writing or you don't feel comfortable, or put it down to insurance regulations or something.

Then at least you'll know what he'll do if, for example, he's sick and can't come to work. Sounds like he'd either say he'd come and then not do so or come even if he wasn't really capable of working, neither of which would be better than texting to say 'sorry, derf, can't come in today because I have the shits - will phone you this evening and let you know how I'm getting on.'

Glad to see this has been resolved. Hope it works out for you and your bil.

What I don't get is why people are being twats when you were asking for advice <shrugs>
And before anyone says anything I don't care what a person says on other threads.

...and how long have you been living there? I have never been out of Europe but I have worked with people from there and I'm aware of the impolite to say no thing. If I'm told something might be difficult I know that means 'totally impossible' You aren't very culturally aware are you?

I'm getting pretty good at this culture stuff but I still end up with a surprise from time to time when I forget I'm not still in Europe.

For instance I still turn up to meetings on time.
I'm the only bugger that does but I just can't get it out of my system that it's rude to be late.
Having said that I did get well pissed off at the ISP when they didn't turn up to fit the service. Turns out that they were unable to do so in that building but just didn't like to say so.
Oh hum. As luck has it I'm quite laid back so the 'ranting and complaints' were little more than sat in the telkom office chatting to the staff and asking if there was any chance they could do it.

One day in Malaysia someone told me that Malay time was rubber. It sort of stretches and bends to suit whatever is happening.
It's bloody water here and wanders where ever the fuck it pleases.

I'm getting there but doing so Indonesian style - slowly :D

Except for large companies contracts are almost non existent.
People like to have family working for them as it's so much easier in many ways and if they lose their job, they just shrug their shoulders and leave.
People here tend to get on with things and hardly bother about much.

A month or so back a bunch of houses burnt down.
Of course the people who lived there lost the lot but there were no tears, no anger or much else.
The village got together to build them simple houses so they had a roof over their heads and that was pretty much that.

If im not mistaken (i could well be) but isnt Rp 600,000 roughly the equivalent to £36 ...

£36 PER MONTH is his wage for full time?

Or is my maths completely wrong.

I fuckin hope they are.

No. You are about right. (depending on the exchange rate)
Why do you hope you are wrong about that for full time?

I suspect it's because your perceptions are wrong. :)

I hoped i was wrong because its sooooo little money.

But i dont know anything about the cost of living there etc.

So, yes you are right i hope i'm wrong because of my perception being that 36 pound a month sounds like slave wage.

feel free to correct me. :)

What i will pay him here is better than he could home to get anywhere without going to a large city and getting back breaking work.
He has now left his job at the wood factory in favour of working here where he will work less hours in good condition.
There is no where else in the area that pay even close to what I will. I had a rare queue wanting to work here when they found out.

To give you an idea I pay myself about a million at the moment and I run a house on that as well as eating out quite a lot.
It was more but I was only wasting it on bits and bobs so I cut myself down.

Fuck me. I paid my cleaner in Laos that and she only worked 6 hours a week.

Depends on the cost of living in Laos I suppose.
Here a simple jobs nets about Rp400,000 or less. Rp600,000 is considered exceptional for non skilled labour especially in clean conditions.

As I said I'm living easily on a million and still able to eat out most days.

When up to speed the place is expected to take less than 3 million/month with costs of about Rp1,700,000 leaving a total profit of around Rp1,300,000.
This first week it's about breaking even.

That of course excludes equipment service costs and other costs that may crop up.
