What produce is worth going to Lidl for?

Heavier on the fennel? WTF? I've never seen bacon labelled so that I can tell this.
I'm comparing what I know - that's all - I still do most of my shopping at the supermarket on weekday evenings, and the non-pancetta bacon is not cut in the right way for me to use a substitute for pancetta, AND it tastes different

That's because you're buying crap bacon then. Get ye to a farmers market at weekends and there'll be plenty of info and diffferent varieties. Most supermarket bacon is shite.

I think Duchy originals do a dry unsmoked bacon type, as do Denhams (with juniper and fennel in the cure). Even Sainsburies often do 'maple cured' bacon, albeit a smoked variety iirc. The Ginger Pig, in Borough and beyond, do fantastic cures - support your local farmers where you can!

I know that they're mainly shit, I do get the Duchy stuff when I do buy bacon rashers, but it's rare that I do - maybe once every two months when I get a craving for a bacon sarnie

It's one of my NY resolutions to try more markets - less drinking at the weekends means more inclination to get up on a Saturday morning!

Fair enough. And while you're in Lidl stock up on the lardons.

Yep, they're too smoky for subtle Italian dishes, but I really rate smokiness in carbonaras for example. Reckon it works better than more subtle cured pancetta in that instance.

I can't belive you are arguing about pancetta. :D

Matter of vital importance this.
 ;)

Nah, but more seriously, I'm always a little cynical about the trust and perceived difference people put in products simply because they have a 'foreign' name. Can't be elevating that Italian filth over our proud British bacon and all that.
;)

I know you don't like it, but I cook it ALL the time and no-one ever complains?! :D

Here we cheat. We wait for the "Italian week" when they do their mass of imported Italian "speciality" pastas and buy enough to see us through the year. :)

I also love their mushrooms in oil (which they have all year round), for bunging in stews.

That's because British supermarkets very rarely tell you what cure was used, other than it being "wet" or "dry", unfortunately.

Doves on Northcote Rd used to do (probably still do) a lovely dry cure bacon that had a really appetising scent of mace coming off it.

Thanks VP - Never knew that. May have to go and see my mate Brian the butcher again. Dove's is definitely the best butchers for miles around.

Went to Moens again recently for some pork belly and duck breasts. Really overrated.

sorry forgot to say

the virgin olive oil

and greek feta cheese

and the mozzarella are very good.

(that is about it for me besides sweets and washing up sponges ah, and yes...pantyliners too)

i would never go near their meat though!

This actually I find is the problem with Lidl. If I go there at all, I come out loaded with chocolate, cakes, biscuits, cheese, sausage etc, because those are the best things there. Conversely, if I go to my local Turkish shop I come out laden with interesting fruit and veg, unusual pickles, nuts and dried fruits, honey, olives, yoghourt etc. So I try to do the latter rather than the former as much as I can. Lidl is just too dangerous.

i agree with ruby. when i go to lidl instead of buying the above mentioned things i end up buying quite an unhealthy range of foods and toys stuff etc.

so my toilet paper and olive oil and feta cheese usually cost me about £10 each time i go= not really that cheap anymore  (i only go every about 7 weeks)

Have you not had any weird cravings satisfied by Lidl yet Choc?

Can we expand the thread to include recommendations of munch please? :D

I've never bought food in lidl (netto, yeah) but I did get the manshape to nab me a weatherstation (or 2!) last week.

what i really like at the moment is ritter sport chocolate (marzipan or milk) and i can buy these only in tesco. and salad. in fact i don't seem to have strong cravings yet. unless when i get something in my mind to cook or eat later i can not change my mind about it anymore. but i was never good at that before.

cottage cheese at lidl is alright too..

Keep an eye on the Lidl website - Ritter Sport in several varieties does come-up on the weekly specials occasionally. ;)

  (checks lidls page as a favourite)

;)

(although one disadvantage with ritter sport is that somehow it's easy to eat a whole one at once, cause i think it is so compact. i wouldn't do that with say a green and blacks chocolate) mmmhh?
