what percentage of your income do you spend on housing?

Have a look at Money Saving Expert: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/

There's lots of ways you can save money on bills - switching to a cheaper supplier, getting a water meter, direct debit, etc. I bet you really could spend a lot less that 43% on bills, it just takes a bit of research.

And I think someone offered you free Sky for a year. For which the deadline is tomorrow. *cough*

Worked it out properly:

Mortgage + Life Insurance (pre-req for mortgage) + Income Protection + Service Charge = 27% of my income

Gas + Elec + Council Tax + Water + Pet Insurance + BT + Internet + mobile = 9% of my income

Debt repayment = 13% of my income

So why am I always skint?!

Food and booze innit.

About half normally, bills included. At the moment nothing, because I am a jammy cunt. :D

I know, I'm rubbish! I think it was the fear that I'd never be able to work it that put me off. :o :D

I'll check on that site though - I'd especially like to stick two fingers up at British Gas and change gas and electric suppliers.

Honestly, if my mum can work out Sky, anyone can. Caallllll theemmmmmm.

And it's really easy to change gas & electricity suppliers - I did it online, no hassle.

I didn't say it didn't matter, I said it's not just the rent that matters. If you're also paying out a significant sum elsewhere (debt for your household, commuting for mine) then you have less %age free income for rent or anything else, so the %age of housing cost alone is not relevant because it's dependant on how much you earn vs what other financial commitments/obligations you have as to whether you can afford the cost, not how much of your income it is.

The phone/internet bill is included here as I included all "living" costs before I actually go out and buy stuff. I would expect mine to be higher than most because I live in a different country to my friends/family, so it's not negotiable for me. All "living costs" should be included in the decision over whether you can afford rent/mortgage IMO, not the rate of rent vs net pay alone.

But then, I'm an accountant, so it'd be pretty poor if I couldn't recognise my own "cost of living" and present it as above :D

Agreed. You do realise I wasn't disagreeing with you before, yeah? :)

Mortgage plus insurance is about 1/3 of my income.

Then bills, council tax...

Then commuting...

Then paying off a loan...

Not much left after that.

Mortgage + Life Insurance (pre-req for mortgage) + Income Protection

not sure if life insurance is required, we got sold that by a financial advisor when we got our mortgage, between us we were paying about £200 a month in various policies:mad: we stopped the policies after a year, we didn't have kids, both of us were working, it didn't make sense to pay out all that stuff

About a third too (it will rise to about 40% in April), which I wouldn't mind were it not for the fact that my boyf (who also gets HB) spends waaay less on his, has a flat rather than a room and gets more income support too

Um. I'm left with £6 a week after rent (includes water and hot water). Luckily(?) I'm not paying my half of the rent right now as I'm kicking the shit out of the local housing benefit imbeciles.
Bit more complicated now tho as the manshape has no income (and JSA cockups have cocked up housing benefit in another way). Doubt the landlords would be so patient but HB transferred a massive amount of money (with no explanation) so paid arrears. Complete farce.

:hmm:

Was a pre-req for our mortgage. Would get it anyway to be honest - it's only £17 a month for both of us.

Zero. Zip. Nothing. Not a penny.

I love the compound life!

Well, some bits of it. I don't love that we are the only people left in 'Village of the Damned' stylee. Or the rats in the roof. Or fucking pigeons.
I do, however, love the whole 'entirely free' bit, the other wildlife, our dogs, the orange groves, and other fruit trees, terrapins and tortoises, 2x1km garden just for us, and my patented nargile/hammock combination.

Sounds interesting! What do you do? How do you do it?

I work as an Environmental engineer/scientist of types. Decommissioning an oil refinary in Turkey at the mo, and they gave us free use of the old refinary accommodation compound rather than sort out a flat in town. Sounds good to me!

<smug>

At the moment flatshare its about 25-30%

but soon when we move in together it may go up to 50 % of our income. which scares the shit out of me quite frankly, meh!!
