I hope that was meant as a joke.

no, there was no problem with nazism in the gdr, it all happened after the anti-fascist schutzwall came down and it flooded in from the decadent west. and that's a fact.

Although I wrote this in a sardonic manner there is some truth in this.
With the Question of St. George, nationalism does'nt necessarily have to be reactionary bigoted of fascist. St. G could be seen as a protector of the weak and the destroyer of a great oppressor(whatever the dragon represents to you). English people and English culture have very positive assets. Why do you think many dispossesed and immigrants come to live in this 'Green & Pleasant' land of ours.

East german youths did, for instance, harbour racist resentment against vietnamese workers in the GDR long before the wall came down. The far right in east germany is home grown, not imported from the west.

As for the phrase anti-fascist schutzwall, I didn't think anyone took that GDR propaganda seriously. You might as well say that the israeli wall is there to protect the palestinians from israeli settlers.

I know when revolutionary politcs are applied to national football competitions it makes us look a bit of a joke but events like this can bring about a collective false conciousness about nationhood

You mean there are people who think we're going to win? ;)

If that's not what you mean, what 'false consciousness' are you talking about?

(Side issue: Is there ever any need for the strange term 'false consciousness'? Why not just say 'mistaken beliefs' instead?)

Nations are constructed in the vision of the ruling class, boundaries are drawn over where they won and lost battles historically, its not false or mistaken but entirely their view of the world.
I hope England win, but Im aware of the fall out from things like this.
