What no cricket world cup thread?

I'd love England to win but can't see it! I think the West Indies have a great chance on home soil. I've put a bet on Pakistan simply because they were 16-1. They're a better side than to be 16-1 outsiders amongst the big cricket nations.

Australia 334/6 off 50 overs vs. Scotland

Australia put the Scots to the sword in the last 3 overs, hitting 41 runs. Hogg hit 40 off just 15 balls including 3 sixes and 3 fours. Shame as Scotland had done fairly well in keeping the score to something approaching respectable until Hogg & Watson went ballistic.

Ponting 113 off 93 balls.

Scorecard

Congrats to Colin Smith - part time cricketer, full-time policeman arrests Australia's progress with a lovely 50 for Scotland. Quality effort

Just a question from an Aussie who doesn't know the protocols - if a Scot is really talented, would he be playing for England?

2 of the guys that played today have. Dougie Brown was part of the England side that won the Sharjah tournament in the 90's. Anthony Hamilton has also played ODI's for England. I'm sure he played in a test match too. Not sure why they can play for Scotland too? Could anyone enlighten me please?

Gavin Hamilton I think. Anthony is a snooker player.

Gavin played one test and got a pair and 0-68 (I read yesterday btw, it's not like I know that stuff generally:o ).

I don't know how the rules on eligability were worked out though. I know Ed Joyce has played for Ireland and is in the England team for the World Cup.

Basically yes. Much the same goes for Ireland, which is why the best Irish player... is in the England squad.

It's a bit unfair really. It's not like a test nation like England isn't already at enough of an advantage over the likes of Scotland and Ireland without pinching any top quality players they happen to have too. I can understand why it happens in test matches. The likes of Hamilton and Joyce can't play test cricket unless they defect. But for the world cup I really think they should be repatriated.

Doesn't answer the question of how they can play for Scotland after representing England.
And yes....think it's Gavin not Anthony! :D Unforgivable err from me as he played for Yorkshire for years!

Ireland and Zimbabwe draw! Looking forward to watching this one tonight...:D

Matt

Unbelievable match! Although Zimbabwe well feel that they shoud have won the match. Fair play to the Irish skipper Trent Johnston for rotating the bowlers, even though Zimbabwe looked on course to win.

It's set the World Cup 2007 alight and personally Ireland vs Zimbabwe will go down as one of the great matches in World Cup history. The Blarney Army (Irish fans) will be partying in Kingston and Ocho Rios tonight!!

If a non native player wishes to play for another country he has to prove he has resided in that country for a minimum of 183 days per year over the preceding 4 years. There's also a mandatory four-year wait after you last represented another country before you can play for your home nation again. Check the ICC rules if you can be bothered! :D

total cricket n00b here, but if Ireland got 221 for 9 from 50 overs and boweled Zimbabwe out for 221 on the last ball...

why dont they win by 1 wicket

One possible reason - Ian Botham once blocked out a whole final over so that his team (can't remember whether it was England or Somerset) would win through losing fewer wickets. This rule avoids that possibility arising - it's a bit of an anticlimax.

ARRRGGGHHHHHH!!!

I always found Joyce really impressive when I watched him in county cricket. What was that though?
