What monitors are folks using these days?

I'm using the CRT monitor that Sunray gave me 5 years ago. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, cheers Sunray.

I have looked at new monitors in the shop windows occasionally but then thought, I'm not spending two or three hundred quid on a monitor when I have one that works fine. And I'm not short of cash, I'm on an average wage, FWIW.

I have been told that CRTs are better than LCDs for gaming and stuff by various people, too. One thing that pisses me off about the flatscreen on my laptop is that when trying to watch a film you have to keep adjusting the angle of the screen so you can actually see the picture rather than a ghostly colourless silhouette of the picture.

I'm sure that's because it's a cheap old reconditioned laptop. :D I don't dispute the fact they've got better since then. I'll catch up one day, I'm sure, but no rush, eh.

My 19" LaCie Electron CRT will only be pried from my system when it dies or I find I can't get accurate colour from it - so far it's holding up well.

the name on the front is viewsonic

i cant remember what model number it is

but it's big enough. not widescreen though

Why wouldn't you use a CRT, for starters they aren't easy to break LCDs and the majority of them aren't in the moronic widescreen format.
You mean in the very ergonomic wide screen format that matches human vision much more accurately than the arbitrary 4:3 ratio?

I've never broken an LCD monitor, anyone around here done it?

Yes everyone who thinks 16:9 is 'moronic' should take a look at all the grandmaster paintings like Michaelangelo who painted in that format.

Should also look at Eulers equation for the golden ration, least I think it was Euler that created it in this form, though its a long used ratio, going back thousands of years.

I use an iiyama Vision Master Pro 17 CRT given me by crispy a couple of years ago :) My computer itself desperately needs replacing (a PIII that another urbanite gave me a couple of years ago) but I can't say I feel a burning desire to replace the monitor. It works fine :)

Although 16:9 is 1:1.777 and the Golden Ratio is 1:1.618 (to 3dp)... :p

It does, however, bear a relationship to the 4:3 aspect ratio commonly used previously as it's the ratio of the squares of 4 and 3, which is the kind of thing that Greeks and Renaissance artists and mathematicians loved. ;)

You know that's really pretty offensive FM, I expected better of you - I know some of you all are financially able keep up to date with the latest equipment, but there are some of us who have to make do with whatever is around - and I am sure there are plenty of people in the world, probably the majority in fact, who are poorer than me and don't have monitors at all.

I was just wondering, if and when I have the money to spend on anything at all, should that ever occur (and it's not likely in the near future), if I should switch to LCD, even if my CRT monitors are still functioning. Last time I had sufficient income to be able to consider getting one, the refresh rates were very poor and they weren't recommended for playing games. I honestly didn't expect to get that kind of scathing response (and that goes for you too DotCommunist).

Do you also mock people in the street if they don't have the latest expensive fashion labels? Shame on you for mocking me for not being able to afford the latest monitor, it's quite disgraceful and I expected better advice from Urban.

OK, back on topic - I would really appreciate a review of LCD monitors with specific regard to whether they can withstand rough treatment, I know Groucho gave his a slight knock, it tipped off the back of his desk, and the display has been wonky ever since - are they a bit more robust now?

Slight knock was it? Can't emember, I was pissed!

I don't see how whether your screen is rectangle or square makes a difference on peripheral vision but my pet peeve is that a good portition of widescreen buyers automaticly tend to think that widescreens are better and they should be entitled to a larger view especially when it comes to things like videogames.

It would take a more to break a regular TV than what's shown on the videos.

I have a 15.4" widescreen laptop with a 17" CRT as a desktop extension used pretty much exclusively for viewing films and streaming video.

It's a nice arrangement and I see no reason to ditch the CRT until it packs up.

I work in a school, and we do occasionaly get them smashed, but it's surprisingly hard to do - we took a screwdriver to a dodgy one once out of curiosity, and it takes an enormous amount of force to cause more than surface scratches.

Inverter and driver board failures are more common - perhaps 5% a year, on kit that's on average 4 years old. Failure rates on CRTs were > 10% a year by the time we got rid of the last ones.

Keeping CRTs as an economy drive is misguided, especialy if they're 21" ones and used a lot - the power draw on large CRTs is around 200W. A 20" LCD will use about 50W at full brightness. That will save you almost £50 a year at 8 hours a day.
