what is your gut reaction to Obama?

My gut reaction to Obama right now is...

  • Total voters

Amusing with a few new comedic opportunities over all before him.

Am considering chasing the odds on a combined voted in/assassinated bet though, so it's not all laugh a minute.

yes, but the sense of 'innocence' and ideals of the american way are/were supposed to be in direct contrast to jaded old Evil Empire mark one (britain)

you cling to it even as you repeat evry damned mistake we ever made and a make a load more. It's tragic, and I mean that genuinly

Perhaps, but I've been to the museums in London and viewed the relics you've stolen through imperialism. Shouldn't you give them back from whence they came? Not sure you've made as much progress as you may think...

poll to follow, probably a shit poll as I will not be able to cover every gut reaction everyone has.

I'm interested especially in whether your reaction has changed since you forst heard of him.

I like him, I think he is playing a difficult game dealing with the American public and some of the media which is clearly heavily biased. So he has to be extremely careful. He can't afford to make the mistakes of McCain and Co who get let off, but instead has to be careful not to make any slip at all.

Just look at the grief his wife got when she made a speech in which she didn't sing the absolute praises of America. Despite the fact that for a lot of black people American life is pretty shitty. She wasn't even allowed to acknowledge that.

I think he is basically wearing a straitjacket at the moment and we won't know what he is truly about until he is elected.

Saying that, we know what McCain and Co are about and I think the risk is worth it. It is unlikely that as a Democrat he will be as bad as McCain and there is every chance he will be quite good.

I did like his comment on smoking cannabis.

Press: Have you ever tried Cannabis?
Obama: Yes.
Press: Did you inhale.
Obama: Well that is the point.

(paraphrased but essentially what he said)

This isn't a 'whose country is the bigger bastard' pissing contest. England would win anyway, we've been around longer.

Who cares, really.

"I like him but I think the US will vote GOP"

Judging from the last two elections nearly half will vote one way and half the other. :hmm: :hmm:

I disagree. Give me Clinton over Bush any day. Oh why Bill did you have to touch that munter? America was starting to build a decent foreign policy for once and recognize global responsabilties outside of it's own economic interests.

certainly clinton was a prototype lcd tv in a world of CRT tv's...

however, and again it's a testiment to his propaganda machine really, near enough everything Bush did in the first term of office was a continuation of polices enshrined and expanded by Clinton, with the notible exception that Bush didn't have the same slick PR machine.

Clinton was very good, as was Blair, at saying this is awrful something must be done, we are particlarlly concerned with this and then enacting policy which lead directly to exactly mirror that which they were decrying.

the only real notiable differences in policy between Bush and Clinton (or Blair and Brown) is the Slick spin factor... both encumbants predecessors had much much better PR that's all.

In essence a men shooting cats whilst screaming won't someone stop the murder, anyone? this is inhumane! (reload please) .

I dont think its time for this black man to be the President.

what personally as in you have some issue with a black man in the white house?

or nationally as in the US still isn't ready to grow up a bit and accept colour outside of a persons own cultural identification is entirely irrlevant to their ability to do the job?

or as in Thatcher being a woman PM in the UK wasn't the pancea for women in politics/equality some though it would be, and having Obama being a black president would be as equally ineffectual? Whilst also giving rise to further re-enforcement of the right wing view of the black community?
I will accept that I am blindly rejecting him because he is not right wing but the colour thing does not bother me in the slightest. I like to think that its all about the politics as far as casting my own vote goes and my own prejudice would be more about religion rather than colour. A Black Christian, or even Jewish, would not bother me but I confess that I might find a Muslim, of any shade, a bit hard to stomach for all sorts of reasons. But thats just me and if push came to shove I am sure that I would still tick the Right wing box rather than anything on the left.

Blindly rejecting someone because they do not profess the same concepts of you isn't particlarlly bright if you are so narrow focused as to be able to not see they is little to no difference over the majority of the policy or aims of the two sides. your concepts of left wing are distorted into a disney fantasy which is in reality not borne out. (particluarlly in this instance where there is little to no difference in real politik terms of the right wing republicain polices and the right wing democrats polices - a neo con is a neo con regardless of the flag of convience they fly.)

also i think it would be a sign of the coming of age of the US if they did have a Muslim president even though he'd be another neo con shit like all the others, it would show that the place had learned to stop over reating and found a modicum of forgiveness, and could even bring about some unity in the wider world. I'm not saying have some fundamentalist fatwah issuing shaira law implamenting Khomeini however...

anyways what ever happened to seperation of chuch and state?

LOL.I said 'this' blackman. Not any or all. Obama is to young. At the moment its all just hype and bullshit. What makes me laugh is that the very people who tend to be at the front of the queue when it comes to deriding modern politics for becoming more and more like some sort of beauty competetion are the very ones who seem to be cheering on Obama the most.

Its simple really. Most of you lefties want him to win primarily because it makes you all feel 'west wingy'. Gives you a warm feeling inside and makes you feel good about yourselves.

Personally I would have loved to see Ms Rice running for President because I feel she genuinely has the leadership qualities, allied with real experience, to make a good job of it but imagine what fun those on the left could have had with their Uncle Tom jokes and the like. Oh, they do already. Of course.
