What is your favourite theatre musical?

The only ones I've been to are Annie, Miss Saigon, and Rocky Horror.

I liked Miss Saigon best out of those.

I'd like to see Phantom of the Opera.

Guys and Dolls.

i really liked the stage version of Billy Elliot. I was quite surprised as I wasn't that keen on the film.

Chicago for me too. Saw it ages ago with Ruthie Henshaw

I saw it with her too. Amazing.
I keep wanting to see it again, but they always have such odd people in it and I get put off. Perhaps wrongly.
Darius though?

oh so many. depends on what production though if you're talking theatre-wise.

i like jesus christ superstar but i saw it a while ago and judas was flat:(

wicked gives me shivers, as does miss saigon, les mis,

didn't expect to enjoy Lion King but they've done it so cleverly, it was amazing.

I'd love West Side Story to come back to the West End, it's my favourite score.

And so sad I missed Little Shop of Horrors.:(:(

oh i'm jealous you saw it with Ruthie Henshall!! So many people I wish I'd seen, Edina Menzel as Elpheba, Lea Salonga as Miss Saigon...

Yes, I saw Miss Saigon with Lea Salonga many moons ago. Great musical that. I recently saw the Anthony Minghella production of Mme Butterfly at the ENO and that was even better but they got a westerner to play Mme Buterfly which was a bit of a shame.

I love going to the theatre, but not especially for musicals, the only one I've seen in recent years is Blues Brothers which was incredible fun.

I love dance and especially modern dance. Before leaving UK we went to see Play Without Words, Highland Fling, a modern ballet about Margot Fonteyn and we went to see some opera (posh musicals!).

Here, the last thing we went to see was Yard Dogs Roadshow which was great fun. Portuguese don't seem to 'get' Burlesque, and they took it very seriously!

Are you me?

I thought i'd hate 'Wicked', but i got free tickets to take the kids and it's phenomenal.

My favourite is Caberet.

Also, I love 'West Side Story' and 'Guys and Dolls'.
I love all your choices too! :)

Yay for you loving Wicked! Did your girls like it too? It is a very female focused musical.... But last time I mentioned it on here, Madusa laughed at me :(;)

I was amused by the keen 'who is the best Elphaba' rivalry between of the fans of Idina Menzel (Broadway then London) and Kerry Ellis (who took over in London and is now off to Broadway).

I love them both having seen Idina perform with the London cast in the 2006 Royal Variey Performance, but Kerry gave me goosebumps!

That type of inter-cast rivalry must exist in other musicals- anyone aware of examples? Chicago must be riven with it, with their frequent cast changes.

Anyway, Kerry may sing like a goddess and be mates with John Barrowman, but Idina wins by being married to Taye Diggs!

Impressive. But a John Barrowman connection always wins in my book!

As far as weird celebrities turning up in musicals, I actually quite fancied seeing Chicago with Kelly Osbourne, but she wasn't in it long.

I saw it with Ruthie Henshall and Uta Lemper! Beat that!

(and then I saw it again with Joel Grey -)

oh my oh my.:mad::D

i am uber jealous.:(

i like the fact that alot of musicals have really strong female characters, maybe it's because audiences are predominantly female?

but if you think about Velma and Roxie in Chicago, Elpheba in Wicked, Eponine in Les Mis, Kim in Miss Saigon etc, they're all strong feisty women.

i saw kerry ellis and she was amazing, but i would've loved to see Idina. I'd love to see Idina in Rent too, but alas i doubt that will ever happen.

apparently the west end revamp of Rent (set in London?!) it's absolute crud aswell.:(

I heart John Barrowman. I liked hearing his justification as a devout christian and yet playing the devil in Jerry Springer!

David Bedella is a born again christian too and played the same part in the original production.

i guess sometimes you have to comprimise your faith for an ace part.:hmm:

Ha! I thought you'd like that! I heard Kelly was great, but I really wasnt tempted to go see her.

I agree with you. There is bound to be some industry analysis about it! Cinema cant touch live theatre for female roles that Im interested in.

Idina is performing in London next month! According to wiki: Menzel will be playing the leading role of Florence in the 21st Anniversary two-night concerts of Chess at the Royal Albert Hall, London from May 12, 2008 through May 13, 2008.

Denise Van Outen didnt do well then? Im going to look up some reviews :(

John Barrowman was in the Pantomime we saw at Christmas. He is fabulous!
I was going to ask about that months ago! How did they shoe-horn the Daleks in?!

Thought Chicago was boring.. great costumes, but... meh.

My favourites would be The Lion King, Wicked and Mary Poppins.

Kerry Ellis was really good in Wicked, she has a fantastic voice, much better than whoever it was in the original cast.

Joseph's probably my favourite - totally unpretentious fun with good songs that half the audience were singing along to.

For grown-up musicals, I loved A Little Night Music - the one I saw had Judi Dench.

I really disliked the Lion King. There's a bit at the start where they have a grand ceremony to introduce the new heir to the throne; the animals all file past bowing - they're only humans with head-dresses on, but it works OK - while wannabee-impressive marching music gradually builds to a crescendo. At the crescendo, the old Lion King holds his son up for all the animals to bow before and be overawed by - and it's a teddy bear. Bizarrely, I was the only one laughing.

It just took itself too seriously. My daughter's been to see it again recently, though, and she enjoyed it. I usually take her in August when kids can get in free.

Not sure Mary Poppins is running for much longer, moomoo, and I'm not sure how easy the tickets are to get. I'd love, love, love to see it myself - it's my daughter's favourite film, just as it was when I was her age. :)

What did you expect... real animals? :hmm:

I don't think it was her, apparently she was rather good, it was the production itself. It was set in London for a start, whereas New York is an integral feature of the show i think, and they mucked around with the score alot, this is all what my friends have said so i haven't seen it myself.

it's a hard one to do nowadays though i think because it's pretty dated now in a lot of ways.

i didn't really want to because i love rent and didn't want it t ruin it for me, i'd rather wait to go see it on broadway...one day maybe...:)

West Side Story is my all time favourite musical, sadly I've never seen it on stage. I also love Guys and Dolls, last year's production was very good with Neil Morrisey and the NT production years ago with Julie Covington was amazing. I liked Chicago but the Mama character was very weak, someone from X Factor or one of those shows who had a nice voice but just couldn't handle musical theatre acting. I've heard good things about Hairspray so might see what's available on special offer.

I've just booked tickets for Birmingham in July scifisam. I wasn't wrong - there were hardly any left.

Oooh, and guess who is in Robin Hood The Pantomine this year? Only John Barrowman again!
