What is the rationale of a clean desk policy?

Sign of an untidy mind?

We have no policy at all.
Five of us share an office.
Four people in the office have desks just covered in junk.

I have a self imposed clean desk policy with a total inventory as follows:

*TFT monitor
*Keyboard
*Two PC speakers
*Mouse
*Skype phone
*Mobile phone
*Coaster
*Mug

Shortly I plan to add a scanner and a second TFT monitor to this list :)

BS is right. It is a prudent measure for companies wishing to protect their interests.

If you are a service provider dealing with sensitive client information e.g. commercial or personal, your service agreements with clients will often specify aspects of your treatment of such information. This can include a clean desk policy to encourage the filing away of sensitive printed material. It is for this reason that our office has a "clean desk" policy i.e. to ensure compliance with contractual obligations. And it makes the cleaner's life a little easier.

Yep agree with the two above and it also protects your service users, or customers.

In practical terms in could mean if you work in Social Services, or any other personal service, you could be leaving around information that someone has HIV, or mental health issues, or has suffered some form of abuse etc, for all to see.

In the commercial world it might be someone's bank account details, or security information, handy info such as you are always out on a Wednesday evening because, for example, you always play Champion's League Football....oh, you already knew that....
