Have you stopped talking about it yet?

Funny you should ask, because when England, who won the trophy that year by the way, went to the 1970 finals as Champions [due largely to winning it in 1966 as you probably know] the greatest Goalkeeper in the World was then playing for Stoke City and I actually saw his winners medal, you know the one he got in 1966 when he kept goal for winners England, on one of many trips to the Victoria Ground {My dad new the groundsman and he let us have a free tour around behind the scenes} . I have met Banksy on many occasions and only just recently saw him at a Sportsmans evening when he re-counted tales of that glorious day in 1966 when he kept goal for England who went on to win the World Cup ........ in 1966, as you know .......................... :p

Thanks for that, I had almost forgotten that England had one the World Cup In 1966.

Nice to see you back ... been a bit quiet on the home front :D

;) Not long after that I saw my first ever FA Cup match, Stoke v Cardiff with a young lanky John Toshack up front for the Bluebirds.

Seriously though, what a lift '66 gave the game and more importantly the Country, the English bit anyway ;)

Probably did, it was quite often nasty in those days whoever was playing :(

The oldest international competition I can remember something was Euro 88, so it's Italy 90 for me.

Colombia didn't qualify for the 1986 world cup :p

1986 for me. Josimar's ridiculous goal against Norn iron from about 50 yards out, Pat Jennings being ancient in the North's goal, Scotland failing to beat Uruguay despite Jose Batista being sent off in the first minute, Uruguay playing up to every cynical south american stereotype in that match, Michael Laudrup, Preben Elkjaer, Jesper Olsen and the rest of that great Danish side, Ray Wilkins getting sent off, France v Brazil quarter final, Gary Lineker being slated as not good enough by the expert panel on the telly who all wanted Mark Hately in the side, Lineker suddenly catching fire and making Jimmy Hill and co look like dicks...

Fantastic summer  I was 8 and collected the panini sticker album.

This summer I am 28 and shall do likewise :D Anyone fancy arranging an Urban swapsies session?

1994 - can't remember that much about it though, there didn't seem to be much interest given that no home-nations qualified.

Euro96 is the first internation competition I remember in any detail.

Italia 90 who can forget pavarotti

and I got a red white and green world cup football off my nan in Plaistow :)

Was only 6 though :o

Italia 1990 - Argentina 0 - 1 Cameroon.

Being from the sticks, I was one of the few coloured people in an otherwise white middle class town.

I was fascinated by Cameroon - hoping that they wouldn't get hammered a la Zaire in 1974, concentrating intently on Maradona to see if he was as great as people said, and hoping that Argentina would get a beating because they knocked out England in 1986 - even though I can't remember anything of Mexico.

I watched a large number of the games. Several things stand out:

Alemao's free kicks
Holland and Sweden flopping
Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia's swan songs.
'West' Germany
The fact that the above never met Italy in the final

England not getting knocked out by both Belgium and Cameroon.

Costa Rica

Steve Bull getting a World Cup fourth place medal :D

Dave Beasant & Tony Dorigo managing the same

It was somewhat surreal at the time seeing England in a world cup semi. Looking back, it still seems a bit surreal.

Still, at least we won a game or two. Unlike Ireland who didn't win any at all, were a terrible side to watch and came out of it all smelling of roses

1966 - but I only remember little bits about it. I was on holiday w/ parents in Wales when the final was held - I never saw it live but remember that there was a lot of loud drunkren people that night, but I never really understood what the fuss was about at the time.

Remember the 1970 finals much better, particularly the England v Brasil game and then us losing to W Germany 3-2. Gutted. :(

Although born in 76, I didn't have a TV as a kid, so didn't get to watch any of them :( but I remember everyone else going on about Mexico 86 and Italia 90... :(

The first one I watched in great detail, barely missed a game, was France 98. I was living in paris at the time and the buzz around the place was fantastic.

1978....unfortunately
Probabley our best team, pitty they were all wasted. that pounding from peru still haunts me. Archy sobered up in enough time to sjow the dutch what we were made of though.

66 - but all i can remember is, as a very wee child, being told to shut up when it was on

1982 - it was all about that Admiral England kit, Bryan Robson's soopa-quik goal and Trevor Brooking's will-he / won't-he squad inclusion. Oh, and this book kept me going throughout

Clicky linky

Ahh, memories
