what is the difference between free-will and self-control?

Self-control is the servant of free will. If you had no self-control, you probably wouldn't be able to realise any of your plans for the future - you wouldn't be in a position to make a future for yourself. Some people lose the ability to exercise self-control because of brain injury. Things just go from bad to worse for them. The most famous example was a railway worker called Phineas Gage, who suffered damage to his frontal lobes in an accident. More about what happened to him here:
