Well having lived in England, France, Portugal and Brasil I think I would have to say I quite liked England as the coolest place on the planet.

brasil is OK , it has beautiful looking people but the centers of population (cities) dont have "cool" spots where people hang out .....maybe besides Sao Paulo.
The reason for this is economics , most brasilians cant afford to go out and drink. Also there is the difference in culture, when you go to a spot that has the potential to be a "cool" spot as we know in England and Europe, the states etc etc the staff are not cool long haired beauties or exoticly dressed foreigners with lots of piercings/tatoos like for example places in Brick lane, Portobello, Camden, Brixton they are stuffy old men in Waistcoats and white shirts. shit. There is no buzz in Brasil for the weekend for an "in" place in town, the culture is completely different, latin.

England is cool, from our capital to our small rural villages. The epitome of coolness. Forget most of the continental countries maybe with the exception of Spain, (really like the vibe and people in Ibiza and Tarifa).

The French , umm no way. Even the millionaire playgrounds in the South (Nice, Cannes, St Tropez, Antibes, Monaco) come up short for me, very false world , far to style concious to be cool. For me cool starts on the streets with the poor, not the other way around from the rich and famous down. So France , can fuck off.

Germany, where I was for 3 and a half years (near Dortmund) is far too conservative/efficient to be cool, although I didnt go to Berlin which is reputably a cool city. I find Germans in particular boring.

At British prices, to be frank, I can't afford to drink either.

Yes, the style and fashion of my bar staff largely determines whether I feel the place is worthy of my clientelle. These days, I expect at least two piercings and three henna tattoos from the person who serves my drinks.

shite shite shite shite shite shite shite shite! Unless you are equating coolness as the aspect of the characteristic by which the bar staff treat their clientelle with such contempt - then I would agree, that the English are by far the least friendly, most obnoxious, least approachable people on the planet.

.......Unless England (London & rural) has fundamentally changed within the last two years since I last had the displeasure of stepping foot in my country of birth, I would find it extremely hard to argue in favour of a country I now feel largely exiled from.

Forgot to mention , Portugal is a non-starter as well, still a 3rd world European country.

I think this is a stereotype that we dont deserve , the English are reserved because we are educated and that is our way, but when we are better known and know someone better we are warm and open.

And I think its better to be reserved and unapproachable, if you dont know someone, its right that is.

do you not just hate all countries sonicdancer???

:) :D made me giggle. Maybe a lost soul , maybe.

where is the best place on earth ? Goa is a paradise with an intesting mix, the political situation now inhibits the party scene.

But with all foreign (to England) paradises its always a lot of grind for a very few pence if you choose to set up shop their , whatever is your game. And to support a "cool" lifestyle in a "cool" country you need bucks. :(

I think if I wasnt married now, Id be looking to get into the porn industry and commute between Rio De Janeiro and Los Angelos.

I've voted 'other' as I reckon the coolest country is Korea and I love it here. This place has so much going for it, easy language, incredible logical phonetic alphabet, friendly people who really go out of their way to help you, a sense of culture, cheap transport, cheap beer, cheap fags, going to beaches in the summer and skiing in the winter, mountains everywhere, jimjilbangs, kareoke rooms, internet access everywhere, blah blah blah... :)

the part of Brsil i went to they went mad on wednesdays and sundays for some reason

they were partying on the streets, anywhere basically, all they needed was some music , friendly people too
