What is the best whisky you can get in a supermarket?

I reckon forget the scotch (most of it tastes like TCP anyway) and get a nice bottle of Irish Whiskey instead - you'll get a better bottle for your money.

Either John Power's (if you can find it) or a nice bottle of Bushmills

The 10 year Bushmills is one of the few whiskys I enjoy :)

Or this:

i have the remains of a bottle of that in my cupboard. the fact that its still there but the bottle of mescal , the bottle of value vodka and the bottle of really disgusting absinthe all got drunk first says alot about it :D

Hendo's partial to Bushmills, especially the distillery reserve.

I'm developing a taste for Asyla, the new malt and grain blend from Compass Box Whisky Company. You can get it in Waitrose.

It provides a good substitute for J&B, while I maintain my boycott of Diageo and all its works.

Compass Box also produce two blended malts, Oak Cross and The Peat Monster, which Waitrose also had good deals on before Christmas.

I really developed a taste for Oban on wet day in Scotland. We went on a distillery tour there when we couldn't face heading into the hills again and I think its lush. Its just a shame proper whisky is so expensive.

It's a complicated business isn't it?

I was too poorly to go out today so I'll go tomorrow. It's not as straightforward as I thought it would be though!

hmmmm, I would stay away from the harsher Islays if I were you, unless you know he/she likes really peaty malts - they are not to everyone's taste.

If you do want to get a smooth Islay, then I would recommend Bunnahabhain or Bruichladdich. Both fine Islays without the harshness of Laphroig. Or even Lagavulin 16 (although that's one of my favs

Also, one of the best there is, is the Balvennie Doublewood 12yr. I would get that one if I were you.

As a general rule, don't spend less than about £27-£30. And if you're feeling flush, push the boat out and go up to £40-45. Unless he/she is a real whisky connoisseur (sp?) and you know what they like. :)

Nobody's mentioned Talisker? That's my favourite of the classic malts.

Saying that, I bought a bottle of Cael Ila (one of the Islay malts) at the weekend. It's absolutely fucking gorgeous.

Talisker is one of my favourites, but I have a big soft spot for Jura since I visited the distillery :)

BTW, for all the pedants whisky is made in Scotland, Wales, Canada or Japan. Anywhere else and it's whiskey

Can't go wrong for the price. :)

It will actually be from a reasonable source.

Just checked - Tesco use/have used:

Bruichladdich (Islay)

Aberlour, Longmorn 8 yo, Macallan 8yo (Speyside but previously from Macallan's Banff distillery in Aberdeenshire - currently inactive)

Most of their whisky sold today is sourced from Kyndall International, which is part of Whyte & Mackay - one of Scotland's largest producers (40 million litres +) & comes from the following distilleries:

Dalmore (Highland)

Fettercairn (Aberdeenshire)

Invergordon (Highland) - One of Scotlands biggest distilleries.

Jura (Island distillery)

Tamnavulin (Speyside)

It doesn't even bear a passing resemblance to anything that could be called whisky. It's fucking vile. I bought some once for toddies and had to pour it away. Their blends are ok but not that value stuff
