What is the best piece of classical music ever?

the other night was listening to this one, gave a different rendition)
cello always gets me.

Thanks for posting that, it's achingly beautiful. I actually played a viola version of that, back in the days when I could actually play the viola...

Bach's Double violin concerto in D minor is a candidate. Just sublime, basically and with the mist fantastic counterpoint.

That's beautiful, very John Cale.

Beethoven's moonlight sonata movement 3 is a masterpiece, but I'm a sucker for Beethoven, absolutely love the 9th which is a really stereotypical piece to choose.

Some absolutely hilarious and stunningly well performed skits by Dudley Moore, guy was an absolute genius:

Ahhh youtube

Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor
Faure's Pavane

and for anybody who hasn't heard it RVW Tallis Fantasia

I defy anybody who considers themselves English to not feel moved by that last piece. Sublime.

Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending

Beethoven's 9th Symphony

Shostakovich's 10th and 15th Symphonies

Schoenberg's Six Piano Pieces

absolutely love this!!!

Yeah, that is good; I also like the "Three Cornered Hat" by him (Falla).

I don't think I can choose one piece; it depends on mood, and classical music has so many. There's soft and hauntingly beautiful like Barber's "Adagio" (also mentioned earlier), Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" or Massenet's "Thais Meditation", or there's loud and crashing like Grieg's "Hall of the Mountain King" or Bizet's "Farandole" (from the "L'Arlesienne Suite").

One that would be in my top ten would be the finale of Saint Saen's "Organ Concerto"; it's very joyous and uplifting. There's a pop song written around the tune from that called "If I Had Words", I forget the artist but it was from early 1978.
